  • Hi John,

I'm new too, have been reading for a few months on and off but have not got up the courage to post yet!!

Wow, for a moment there I thought it was my husband posting under a false name!!! but thankfully it's not, we're in quite a bit depper than you and are thankfully holding the relationship together quite well for now.

I'm not at the stage where I can post my SOA yet but will hopefully do so very soon. I just want to say thank you for posting, just knowing that we're not the only ones in a mess has helped me a lot.

Please keep your chin up - you will get though this, and hopefully so will we!

    Hi John
I replied to your first post in why was i so stupid's thread - i hope it helped at the time. Glad to see that you have started your own thread and I'm sure that you will get some good help and support from everyone.:D it helps to know you are not alone.

Once you can face it open all your statements/letters and get them organised. It honestly feels better once you have everything organised and know exactly the situation you are in, take control of the debt instead of letting it control you.Once you get into a fighting frame of mind things don't seem as bad. yes you will still be in debt but you will be taking control and trying to reduce it. I'ts not easy but you can do it, especially with the help of the folks here.

    Good Luck

  • To everyone who took the time to post a thread, you have my most genuine thanks. Its amazing to see that there are still people around who take time to help others in this way, even at the time of night I posted my thread. Good old fashioned values or whatever else they may call it, these days its not seen or heard of very often.

I have to correct my food bill. Having spoken to my OH, its comes in at around £300. But im still gone take the advice given and stock up, plan my weekly menu and only buy these foods.

Webitha, whats this secret of stardrops and white vinegar?

My mortgage repyment is interest only. I got a truly bad deal and trying everything possible to sell up. The fuel amount is low because I do my utmost not to use it but am expecting a move in work within the next few months which will take me some distance from home. I cant give it back until next March either, so will have to stick with it.

Got a car boot sale planned pretty soon, and may venture into the world of ebay selling!

Ive started to reclaim bank charges. Natwest owe me £1026, but have just told me to wait for around 6 - 7 weeks while they investigate and process my claim. Can you do this with credit cards too?

I forgot to put council tax on there tho which is another £92 a month, and house insurance £28. Got a telephone line for internet access which is £25 for both!

Thanks again all for chipping in. I will let you know how I get off. Hope I can keep the momentum going now its started

    Kindest regards

    John

Just wanted to say welcome & congratulations on your lightbulb moment (also known as LBM!!) & great to see you have already encouraged others to post by your thread! How great is that eh!! Just sort things (ie paperwork etc), sell stuff off and get that spending diary & you'll be amazed how you'll do! It will take time but you're on the right track, Check your utilities etc, start using sites like quidco and make even more dosh. The main thing s yo are on the right track! Have you spoken to the estate agent as to why he thinks your house is not selling or do you possibly need another estate agent if no viewings at all? Just a thought. Anway, just wanted to post a hug & say welcome to a site that will literally change your life!

Ok, how much is your mortgage for? £1200 a month is a huge amount for an interset only mortgage.
What are the rents like in your area? Is it possible to rent out your home for more than you would pay for rent elsewhere? Ie, girls share a bedroom for time being.
It's early days at present, your partner has been unwell and has now got a new baby (tiring!). You are working every hour god sends so you are both shattered.

I know this is hard for you but you really really need to tell us the full extent of the debt.
We need outstanding amounts, aprs, min payments, term outstanding (loans and mortgage).

You and your partner need to pool your resources. I don't get this his and hers money, it encourages people to not have to consider others when spending. The money that each of you bring in is family money because it is there to provide for all of you.
You say that £10k of your debt is a redemption penalty from your mortgage but you haven't sold yet so surely don't owe it? Dependant on figures and sustainability I would not recommend that you try to sell at a loss if your debt repayment is sustainable.

If we are to help you properly we need to know the full picture and if you want to help yourself you need to know the full picture. It might be scary but a problem shared is a problem halved after all.

If you feel able go to www.whatsthecost.com/snowball.aspx and enter all of your debt details to find out the most efficient way to repay your debts. If not one of us will do it when we know everything.

Just remember, once you turn the lights on, the monsters go away!

  • Hi John, welcome to DFW!
Ive started to reclaim bank charges. Natwest owe me £1026, but have just told me to wait for around 6 - 7 weeks while they investigate and process my claim. Can you do this with credit cards too?

Not quite - you drive the timetable:

    1) They have 40 days to give you your statements
    2) 2 Weeks to respond to your claim
    3) 2 Weeks to respond to your letter before action
    4) Start your small claims action

And yes, you can definitely do it with credit cards too.
Hope that helps - on the negative side, they will stall for time. On the positive side, you are one of many claiming and they have a system set up to respond in the above timescales.

Good luck with everything; have a play with the snowball calculator and here's hoping you can rebuild your relationship too :)

Hi John, well done for posting. You should post a thread on the housing board entitled something like 'why won't my house sell' and give a link to its rightmove advert. You'll then get loads of advice from people (including myself!) and lots of handy hints to improve the house's prospects. Sometimes you don't see things when they're under your nose all day.
What did I do at work before I discovered MSE?!
