My cars 10 years old, its just cost me £100 to fix the exhaust, but hasn't cost me £200 a month for some finance deal, so I really don't give a stuff :)

My cars cost just over £1000 in parts, repairs and mots etc.. Over the last 5 years.

A lot less than the cost of a lease or depreciation on a new car. Things like clutches can be expensive to replace but if you get good service from the car afterwards then its worth doing.

Thats the issue with older/cheaper cars. People assume that because its only worth £500 then its not worth spending £100 - £200 on a service.

Mine's 15 years old and I've just replaced the tyres at most recent MOT (they weren't the first tyres!). Yes, it wasn't cheap - but that's regular stuff that needs to be done irrespective of the age of the car.

I'll keep it ticking over until the repairs are no longer ones which are 'consumables', if you like.

A lot of cars these days its when the engine blows up and you can buy a newer model for less than the cost of a replacement engine.

The problems then are that the new car may need parts replacing that you recently did in the older car.

Got to be honest, I'd prefer an older car that I can DIY fix rather than a new car for a £stupid monthly payment for years on end.

Talking of which I'm gradually getting my 15 year old demon ready for the road again..
