Making fruit vodka help please

I would like to make fruit vodka with damsons and soft fruit. Has anyone a good recipe and what bottles do you use and how do you sterilise them?

Thanks

When I made cherry vodka, I didn't follow a recipe. I just got a big kilner jar and put the cherries in layers, with sugar between each layer, then filled it to the top with vodka. The cherries filled the jar to about halfway.

Then, I gave it all a good shake and stored it in a cupboard for a few months, giving it a shake every now and then.

After a few months I tasted it and it wasn't very smooth, so left it for a few more until it tasted lovely!
Once it was ready, I just strained it into a bottle (an old gin bottle). I didn't bother sterilising the jar or the bottle as it's alcohol, but if you want to, give the bottle a wash in hot soapy water, rinse, then dry in a low oven.

The cherries then got frozen and used in cakes.
  • The recipe I used was:-
    1 bottle of spirit
    1 and half lbs fruit
    Threequarters lb of sugar
Tip in to large kilner jar, shake well, seal & leave for about 6 weeks, shake occasionally to ensure sugar has dissolved.
I have made damson gin & blackberry vodka this year.

  • I do roughly two cups of fruit to one of sugar, and cover with spirit of choice. It's easy to add more sugar if it's a bit tart after a few weeks, but obviously you can't remove it if it's too sweet!.

Once the fruit has been strained, tip it back into the jar and pour over some sherry and a little more sugar. Leave for a few weeks and I find the sherry takes on some of the taste of the spirit - yum!
  • Hi all

Thanks for the tips. I now have damson vodka in a Kilner jar.
