I sent the following letter to HSBC on 29th May 2007 along with a spread sheet of charges
Dear Sir or Madam,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I am writing to request that you repay all the default charges that have been applied to my account. I do not believe these charges reflect the true cost to HSBC Bank Plc.
The charges total £1030.5 for a/c xxxx4780 and £55 for a/c xxxx7119, a combined total of £1080.50. I believe I have been unlawfully deprived of the money and therefore ask that you repay me the full amount. Please find a full schedule of the charges with this document.

I look forward for a full response to this letter within 14 days.

Yours faithfully,
End of letter
I have ommited the first 4 digits of my bank accout numbers just for security purposes on this forum.
Now i rang them yesterday and they said that they were only paying %£55 charge and i asked them why when i am claiming more than that and they said beacuse it lookes like the 4780 a/c deatils ahve been marked off with a black pen along woth the the charges for that account..so i fought it saying thats !!!!!!! unreasonable and that hsbc do not have nay right to do that and they said they didnt do it and i said why the hell would i send in a letter with balck marks everywhere?
then today (17th July) I recieved this repsonse
Dear Miss Patel,
Thank you for your letter dated 25th May requesting a refund of your bank charges of £55.00 passed during the last 6 yrs.
In cirucmstances where you would like us to make a payment from that account that would if met by us lead to your account going overdrawn or over an agreed limit, we have to consider wehter to make this payment. A fee is payable for this service which is listed in the published price list. if your claim for a refund proceeded to court we therefore believe we would successfully resist any legal challenge in realtion to these fees.
We are hoever mindful of management time and irrecoverable legal costs that may be incurred in realtion to such a claim. For those commerical reasons alone and wothout any addmission of liability we are prepared to make a payment to you for the sum of £115. in a FULL and FINAL settlement of this matter.
If you accept this proopasal please sign and return form withing 10days. If we do not recieve your letter witihn this timecale, we will take it you have declined this offer.
End of HSBC letter
The !!!!!!!s didnt even acknowldefe the £1030.50 claim on a/c 470. they have only acknowledged the claim for £55 on a/c 7119.
What should i do now?
All suggestions welcome...
has anybody been in similar position?

Yes. Read here for advice and help:
HSBC Thread
My further advice is that you getting apoplectic at the first stage is very bad for your health so stop it right now. You cannot rely on the bank to play the game as you want it to be played.
Follow the process laid out in the main article. ALWAYS communicate with them in writing, never by telephone and dont expect the replies you get to match the letters you send.
Read the above thread, calm down and approach the matter slowly and methodically. Good luck
