When Do Underpayments of Child Tax Credit Get Paid Back to Claimants?

Does anyone know please?

My daughter had a high income during 12/13 due to doing several jobs (and running herself into the ground!) - obviously during that tax year she didn't claim any benefits except the standard Child Benefit for her one child.

In 13/14 she went back to College and only kept on one of her part time jobs so her income was considerably lower than the previous year. At the beginning of 2014 her partner left her so she ended up doing one part time job (15 hours a week).

So in January 2014 she put in a claim for child tax credit and an award was made - however, based on her income from 12/13 she was only physically given £44 but was told that this was an interim payment and, based on the income she had declared she would be due £750 for 13/14.

She was told that once she had her annual review she would be able to see the figures they were using for 13/14 and let them know of any discrepancy with her figures - and that the remainder of her claim for 13/14 would be paid at the end of August (so about now).

She had her annual review letter - although she didn't initially, so phoned them so they sent another - then both arrived within days of each other. Regardless, the letter said that if she agreed with the figures quoted then she didn't need to do anything.

So, she didn't do anything, in accordance with the instructions in the letter, because she agrees the figures quoted for 13/14 are correct.

Does this all sound correct? It has seemed an awfully long wait for the underpayment from 13/14 - and now the last working day of August is here and there has been no payment into her bank account I'm beginning to wonder if she has misunderstood something.

Just after some views on whether she has got the right end of the stick or whether alarm bells should be ringing?

Thanks in advance.

Comments

  • Not sure - when would that have been sent out?
  • Just checked the last letter she received - it was dated 16 July and the title is:

Tax Credits Annual Review for Year Ended 5/4/14

The letter does say that it is the annual review and also the award notice for 13/14. It also says that there is a period of 30 days from 31 July 14 in which to raise an objection to this calculation - so I'm wondering if that means the payment will be after the 30 days - so next week maybe?
  • Thanks for your help - I'll get her to give them a call.
