I am a bit surprised to be honest.

My husband knows nothing of our finances, because he isn't interested. But if there is a 'something' going on then I tell him.

We are a partnership - we both have areas that tick along and we take on responsibility for, but if any of those need a looking at we share that responsibility because that's what being married is. Sharing responsibility and shoring each other up.

You are dealing with a lot on your own, it's not unreasonable to want to have your wife in the know, on board, and part of the tackling it team.

You have been asked several times on this thread but I can't see an answer - £40,000 is a LOT of money, how did it get so high? What was it spent on? Has this now stopped?

If your wife doesn't know it could easily happen again. Either because she won't notice you doing it, or because she will do it herself because she doesn't have an understanding of the repayment.
  • Hi, thanks for the posts.

The debts were built up by both of us but they really started to rack up when my wife was on maternity leave 4 years ago. We also got married which cost a fair bit and we didn't budget properly for it ( stupid I know but just being honest!!). Looking back we had been overspending by a couple of hundred quid a month for around 8 years without really realising. My wife would agree that we are both responsible for accruing the debt.
