Going to put it on the desk but need it to be mobile too.
There are two screens currently on HKUD - could anyone say if they're suitable for hooking up to the Macbook?

The first thing you need to do is check what ports there are on the proposed MacBook. My 2009 MacBook Pro has a mini displayport, later models have, I believe, Thunderbolt ports.
You aren't restricted to monitors that have a Thunderbolt port though as you can get adapters so you will probably need either a Thunderbolt to DVI or Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter as well as the monitor.
I bought a selection of adapters for mine, Mini Displayport to VGA, HDMI and DVI to enable me to connect to most monitors.
You can pay a lot for these adapters or like me you can buy them cheaply off eBay. I've had all mine since 2009 and they work perfectly when required.
HDMI adapter;

Or what about a single adapter with several connectors;

We own a Macbook Pro and an Air, and I would say when the Pro dies, hopefully decades down the line, I will be switching to an Air.
You get used to the small screen quick, it's amazingly light, and I think it's a great machine.
The Pros are heavier, and not really needed for most applications, certainly not for what OP describes he needs. Also, the Air has miles better battery life.
Would heavily recommend the Air, but if you are going Pro, don't go for the discrete graphics card, the onboard is more than enough for most people, and less likely to fail.
I think 8GB of RAM is more than enough for most people, I think if you are spending money, max out the hard disk space, it fills up really quickly for a lot of people with movies, tv shows, downloads, etc.0
