DVD+RW problem

I have a newish Liteon DVD rerwriter that is supposed to support just about every format available.
I've so far used it to make about 15 CDRs of various things using the supplied Nero7-No problems at all.
I've also burnt Linux iso's with no problems.
Tonight I wanted to copy work photos from my hard drive onto a Verbatim DVD+RW 4xcertified disk.
The process starts formatting the disk, then stops saying "illegal disk".
I've tried Imgburn, that says "disk needs formatting" I click "OK" it then gives the error noise and stops.
Any suggestions?

It's burnt cd's fine, using v.v. cheapos for some music files and some branded ones to make personal backup copies of software.
It plays DVD movies, the photos I wanted to copy were taken from another DVD, put on my HDD and were to be copied off.
I deliberately chose that brand because I've used their floppies and CDs and always found them to be reliable.
When I get a chance I'll try them on a mates PC, that should tell then if disks or possibly burner.Move along, nothing to see.0
