Is this a CCJ or not?

I have to pay a £300 referencing fee to an estate agents but I won't get it back if I fail referencing and she told me if I have any CCJ's and I said no but I'm abit confused.

Is a CCJ a letter that specifically tells you "you are being taken to court" or is it classed as a CCJ if the letter simply says "if you don't pay we will take you to court" because I have had quite a lot of those types of letters but never an actual direct request to attend court for any reason.

I really cannot afford to lose £300...

A CCJ is when you are taken to court and judgement is made against you. Has that happened?

A CCJ is neither of those things, it's a "County Court Judgement". I.e. you have been taken to court and the court has ruled against you (even then, it's only registered if you don't pay any amount owing within 28 days).

However, if it is possible that a company has taken you to court and you ignored the letters you may have a CCJ and not know about it. You can check with registry trust online for about £4 http://www.trustonline.org.uk/search-yourself

I've never been taken to court or had a letter telling me that I need to go to court... just threats about court but I will use that trustonline thing for £4... are you sure it's safe to use that site?

I just went ahead and did the check... no CCJ's apparently. I hope to god that site is "trust" worthy lol. Cheers for the link.

That site is the official means of access to the court register of judgements and fines, so it's as safe as any site gets.

What do you mean by safe?
It's a legitimate website for an official institution and the payment section of the site uses the security protocols you'd expect.

ETA: Got distracted and too late by the time I posted. Glad to hear the news OP - your reference check should go through fine :).

Sorry if it's a little off-topic, but I think my eyebrows are stuck to the ceiling after reading "£300 referencing fee". That is a shocking mark-up on what is likely to be some very basic admin work.
