Tenants are moving out at the end of August. In order not to end up paying bills that I am not responsible for, do I need to let know the electric & water company that the contract ends by the end of the month? I will take note of the electricity meter as soon as they move out but will they come and check by themselves?
I will let the council know, is there anything else I need to do? Is the first time my tennants leave

Thanks

The contract for energy company is between them & your tenant so you will not be liable. But I would personally take readings on check out day & call or email the energy company advising them of the readings for the address in question. Tenants should be doing the same & settling or transfering the bill to their new property.I don't respond to stupid so that's why I am ignoring you.

As quidsy says:
I email (if possible) utility companies & council on ALL move-ins & move-outs, with meter readings, copying tenants.0 -
I sometimes go a step further.
Prepare letters, in tenant's name, to each utility, leaving gap for readings.
On final day, read the meter with the tenants, insert readings, ask tenant to sign, then post myself.
That way tenant does not need bother, and I know he's sent a (correct) final meter reading, ideally with his onward address for final bill.

Hi dodgysailor I'm a landlord and I always give the companies -- gas, water, electric and council -- the readings myself on both move in and move out. If the tenant also does this then all the better. I have been caught out by tenants giving different (earlier) leaving dates to utility companies.
Remember to update your landlord insurance company that the house is untenanted for the period that it is empty.0
