Testing technical analysts: the old test is to take a graph of how a share fared over the years, tear it in half, give the bit for the earlier years to the analyst, and ask "what happened next?"

oh i should have stated - i don't believe in TA for buying, although it is sometimes an aid for target setting and stop-loss setting.

There's lots of words in there I don't really understand.

By spinning do you mean on an exercise bike?

I understand every single word - but not when they are all joined together  :rotfl:
  • How do you purchase shares at IPO price? A guide on this will be useful. Do you buy these or put an order in prior to the shares becoming available to the general public? If so, how? Are there sites dedicated to allowing a customer to purchase shares at the IPO price?

    Thanks

Fully invested currently. Bought Cenkos today. Been tracking the Company for a while and price appears fairly stable. AIM shares are bounding up and down very rapidly. So I've reduced my trade size (£) and spreading the purchases of the same stock.

I've just ordered a copy of the book you mentioned by Murphy, Kittie. Thought about getting a book about technical analysis for a while, as previously I thought I may as well just read my tea leaves, so I'm open to being proved wrong :)

Shares wise I'm still holding Emed (could be getting exciting, but I'm not getting my hopes up), Centrica as a punt (up a bit), and my chunk of LLPC which I don't want to sell.

Plus some trackers and things, boring stuff.

No real income at the moment so holding off. I'm a bit worried about things getting 'toppy', so I don't want to buy too much more anyway.

You can apply for the IPO through your broker company - if your own broker isn't participating then find one who is for the companies you are interested in.

I use III and 'shareprice' (actually the same company) on the "my holdings" web page they both have a little button saying "IPO / new allocations" - if i click it it mostly says "there are no current IPO's" but when they participate it will open a new window with the prospectus and other documents attached. You then "apply" for the amount you want - the money needs to be in your trading account - and it ring fences those funds until the allocation. You get a secure message usually the day before restricted trading commences to say how shares were allocated and how many you got (if not all you applied for).

I've only gone and bought the study guide that goes with the book rather than the book itself... You'll have to wait a bit longer for a review.
