Canadian Dollar Cheque

I have been lucky enough to have been left some money from a relative in canada. I have received the cheque today made out to me in Canadian Dollars. I personally bank with Bank of Scotland and have enquired there about depositing the cheque. They will charge me £80 for the service and cannot guarantee that i will receive the exchange rate at the time of me handing over the cheque. I was wondering if anyone had any experience of using other banks for this service.

  • Cant comment about chares but I do believe that the cheque has to be sent bank to Canada by any bank you cash it with.

I'm with Santander, and they charged me £8 for depositing a USD cheque into my account ( about 3 years ago ). The exchange rate they gave was broadly in line with any of the main high-street exchangers.

Just a thought - would paypal be any better - if your relative could transfer to you via paypal, then you could shift it into your bank account ? I've no idea really, other than that paypal must do millions of cross-currency transfers, so they know what they're doing ! Might be worth investigating.

It's from a will, I (as an executor of said will) wouldn't touch PayPal with a bargepole.

It's too late anyway, the cheque has been cut, it's a matter of minimising costs for cashing it.

It would probably help to let people know roughly how much it is for though.
