My thoughts fwiw, having recently moved from my home area:
- I checked out what activities I like are available in my new area and there had to be enough of them for me
- Moving from England to Wales, I checked out what sort of proportion of English incomers there are, just in case there are "cultural differences". There are indeed cultural differences. These are only relatively minor, but enough that I am glad I made sure I moved to somewhere where I could just function in English "circles" only if need be. I'm fine with the vast majority of people all round, but it helps. The cultural difference, from what I can see, is people functioning a lot less as "one solo person" and rather more as "a member of a family" than I am used to and elderly people get a level of "Respect" that doesn't happen where I come from. I continue to be "one solo person" and treating people of all ages as exactly equal and that is more understood by other incomers I am finding. There may well be equivalent cultural differences between different areas of England too. No value judgements...but we all (including me) will think our way is the norm.
- I felt/feel I'm pretty much as old I could be and move to a different area and settle in okay to a new area and/or new house. Even if you're perfectly healthy there comes a time when you just cant CBA to make the effort necessary to do the work on a new house/adapt to a new area.
- Counterbalance your remaining mortgage against all the costs of moving to a different house and then don't forget to add in all the work you would decide to do on a new house. I doubt you'd "profit" at all from moving put like that. My swopover costs were around £9,000 and, to date, I've spent around £30,000 on this house (with £20,000 or so to go, but I haven't got the money to cover that).
Add all that up and, in your situation, I would think twice actually.
My own circumstances were that I simply HAD to move. I had been in a starter house for way way way too long and it had come to a point where it needed a lot more time/money spent on it and "What would have been the point for a starter house?" and also I had got too old to be living in a starter house any longer quite frankly. I know (rock solid certainty) that once people get to "a certain age" then they have detached houses if they want (I do) and they have proper gardens they can do their gardening in if they want (I do). Ahem...blame that on my personal background LOL....but..."You can take the girl out of her background, but you cant take her background out of the girl"....oh well...
So, work out your own personal life circumstances and don't bargain on saving any money at all if you do move.0 -
would you consider a lodger? could help you pay off the mortgage a little faster or you could put money towards visiting friends.
It has crossed my mind I must say Kyana. I have done it before - when in Winchester. I wouldn't mind the Mon-Fri ones that I might get via the office here. I've had full time ones but would prefer my weekends to myself. When DD moves out soon, I may well advertise her room on our intranet.Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015.
