HPI milage request

Hi, sorry if it's the wrong thread, but today i've had a letter from HPI asking the milage of a previous vehicle when i sold it. It's correct saying I got the vehicle 6.3.2010 but says I sold it on 22.2.12, (wrong, i sold it on the 29.12.11).
Seems genuine but I wasn't aware they do this kind of thing?
Any info on this would be great, thanks!

Did it go to a trader? If so, then the next registered keeper may very well have been effective from Feb. Between Nov & Feb, it'd have been "in trade", on the yellow bit of the V5C.
If you sold it to a private buyer, did you send the V5C off yourself with the new keeper details?0 -
I traded my car in with a main dealer (motorpoint) then they sent all the docs off for me, and i got my new v5 for the next car within a few weeks.
I know a rough figure that the milage was when it was sold, just slightly concerned of sending it off, not sure if it's a con or anything?0 -
So there y'go, it was in the trade from Nov until Feb. They're just checking that it didn't have a haircut during that time.0

A flatmate of mine part exchanged a 2007 Clio for a 2013 Corsa at a large dealer group. They flogged the Clio off to a 2 man band on the Wirral. It hadn't done an excessive mileage and everything added up (MOT done previous month). The small trader sent him a letter as the previous registered keeper asking him if the mileage was correct and whether the clocks had been changed, but he refused to participate in this becase an in-trade sale doesn't have any warranties and probably happened at auction anyway. The small trader took the risk of buying a "low mileage" car from the large dealer group, then wanted a story to back it up and make it somehow worth more.
So in your case I wouldn't participate either unless the present owner wants to pay you a fee.--Savings: £304k and counting...26/09/14 the day I reached 100k, 24/07/20 200k, 23/08/24 300k

I can't see anything wrong with just telling the truth: "I sold the vehicle on 22.02.12 and the mileage was approximately 60,000", or whatever. The wording gives you a bit of wiggle room if anyone wants to make an issue of it, but essentially all you are doing is reporting a fact as you see it.
It can't do any harm, and if it helps to nail someone who is clocking cars, so much the better. And if it helps a small trader make a bit more value out of the deal or reassure a new owner, where's the harm in that? I'd expect to do it at no cost to myself (email or sent an SAE), of course. I'm not made of money. If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
Fascinating that a huge number of rants are on here about traders selling "clocked" or bogus history cars, but there are forum members advising others not to participate in HPi doing their normal questionnaire, or in the case of an Indie, who is actively proving the provenance of his stock. Who are you going to trust?0

Thanks guys, at least i know it's a legit thing rather than a scam. In that case happy to send it off with corrected dates on, if someones clocked my beloved first car i'd love to nail them for it lol0

This is a money saving website.
HPI profit out of supplying data.
They should be prepared to pay the going rate to get this data!
Asking former owners is fair enough but they should pay them for their time (and trouble).0
