Sky tv charging for cancelled services. Is it breach of contract

I phoned sky on 10th august and cancelled my phone line and broadband. I was told there would be no cancelation fee (there hasn't been) and they told me it would be cut off on 26th august. They also emailed me cancelation email and that also states the service would end on the 26th august. They generated a bill and on that bill they have charged me for telephone and broadband from 1st September to 30th.
I can't afford to pay the extra months rent for a service that I don't have just for them to give it back the following month. I have spoken to sky to inform them i have cancelled my direct debit as I can't pay £71.46 when my bill should be £47.00. I also informed them i cancelled the majority of my services as I could not afford to pay for them. They said I will get cut off on the 1st September. Surely it is a breach of contract if they are cutting me off for services I no longer have.

Where do I stand ?
I have cancelled everything possible and downgraded to lowest package I could.

Cancelling a DD is never the way to go.

When did your minimum contract end?

I been with sky 14 years. The only thing I could not cancell was original tv, which I have to keep till 31st December.

Phone and broadband was past minimum term.

As for cancelling direct debit, it is the way to go as I don't have the funds to pay them. So I would also incur bank charges.

Just had feedback from sky forums.

It appears to be correct. Will be cut off.

Just need to know where I stand as service is paid for in advance, surely they can not charge me till the end off contract as it's there fault on overcharging me ?

I'm puzzle why you gave notice on 10th August and were given a cut off date of 26th. I'd expect 10th September....or did you request to be switched off as soon as possible.

Cut off date was given, as broadband and phone was transferred to bt (as it worked out around £100 better off).

...but even if you are "cut off" earlier, you are still liable for the notice period!!
Also,I assume that you got a MAC from Sky to give to BT??
  • Moving your services to BT doesn't end your liability with Sky.
You chose to move your services too early, do they can still charge for the notice period.

Sky said I could leave broadband and phone. As soon as and gave me a mac code. Also have the email saying when it would end.

Managed to get some sense from someone on sky help on twitter who seems to think that as soon as I'm cut off, they will redo the bill and remove the phone and broadband charges.

    Just a waiting game now.

I mis-read your post and was thinking of tv cut off.

When I moved from BT to Sky, I gave the months' notice but was transferred sooner. However, Sky gave a credit to cover the expense. (I did have to request this, but knew it was being given to other customers).
