Royal Mail redirection

We are moving to a new rented property next week. My partner and I cohabit and have a daughter, who has his surname. I have a different surname.

I'm setting up Royal Mail redirection, but you have to pay per surname. Has anyone tried hyphenating their surnames on their application form and did it work?

So e.g. application form for Ms Smith-Johnson whilst person 1 is Ms Johnson and person 2 and 3 are Mr Smith and Miss Smith.

I'd rather not pay double, just because we're not married.

  • Redirecting post for the surname of Smith-Johnson would redirect anything directed to Mr/Mrs Smith-Johnson; not Mr Smith or Mrs Johnson...

If you have two surnames, you need to pay for both.

How concerned are you about receiving all your mail?

Redirection is not 100% guaranteed anyway - the odd letter slips through and is delivered to the old address.

Messing around with names will just increase the number of these letters greatly.

If that's not a worry - then try saving some money (let us know how it goes).

If your post is important to you - do it properly to achieve the best results.

Longer term, the real solution is to contact all your correspondants and give them your new address. Many businesses and Gov depts will accept notification (free) by email. Or use the phone if you have inclusive calls in your package.
