Cancelled Fitness First Memebership but They are Chasing me for Money!

Hi all. This probably isn't the right section to put this thread in, but I wasn't sure where else to start it.

Anyway:

I cancelled my Fitness First Membership back in April this year. I was leaving the country to work in Hong Kong (currently still here). So I gave my employment contract in person at my local Fitness First branch. The Fitness First staff phoned head office, confirmed the cancellation and told me it was fine.

As I was leaving the country, I also cancelled all direct debits coming out of my bank account.

So now in August, my parents in the UK receive a debt collector's letter, stating I need to pay back several months of subscription to Fitness First.

So what I need to know:

What's the best way of going about this? Fitness First messed up the cancellation. What are my rights? Will they drop the claim?

I've been so incredibly busy with work and because the timezone is 7 hours ahead, I haven't been able to phone Fitness First UK yet. Tried talking to them via Facebook and Twitter - no response.

There's a chance I could return to the UK in a few years so I would not want my credit history completely ruined by this.

Thanks for the help.

Speaking to Fitness First regarding why they think you owe them would be a good first step. Either by email, phone or letter. They're not going to discuss it on social media.

    This is my advice, too.

It needs to be in writing.

    Put it in writing.
Give them details of the person (if you don't have a name then visual details e.g. female with ponytail).
You probably have a rough idea of the date and time. You probably went before work, after work or lunch hour.

Tell them what happened and also your circumstances.

Hopefully that will be enough to get it dropped.

In future I would note down a time & date & name (for me it would my diary on icloud) for any important financial transactions done by phone.
Recorded Phone calls can be traced if you have a time & date.

What did your membership contract say about cancellation?
