Post-grad council tax

I am not sure how these things are calculated, but I can't see anything remotely resembling 25% anywhere there.
Are you receiving council tax support ?
If so then the council tax charge payable is calculated as :
e.g :
£1000p/a full charge less 25% discount = £750 due.
Any council tax support paid would reduce the £750.00 and you pay what's left.I have read that it all depends which local authority you are with whether you get council tax reduction or not whilst doing your dissertation. Just wrong!
If a person is a full time student and meets the requirements then the council have no discretion in the matter and must grant it - the physical requirement to 'attend' a course of education was removed a few years ago and replaced with the requirement to 'undertake' a course of education.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
Thank you CIS.
I get a reduction via that Council Tax Reduction Scheme.
Council tax p/a = 1539.76
Council tax reduction scheme = 887.36
Payable = 643.40
Still can't see a mention of 25% or anything that approximates that value (me thick!).

Hi Mark,
The 25% discount is not automatic, you have to apply for it with proof that one of the residents is a full-time student. Have you given the council this evidence? If you're not sure what to do then your son's university might have an advice department where they can explain to him what to do about the council tax.0 -
No evidence yet, he will be able to pick up a certificate from uni when he starts (if they give him one).

He should have a letter from the uni confirming his place and indicating if this is part-time or full-time course. This should be enough evidence if the course is full-time for you to get the discount.0
