Made some of these today. DD2 likes them, DD1 not keen on the meringue bit (feels funny on my teeth). I think they are yummy, would be tempted to put more coconut in next time as just guessed this bit.
Will have to get the official verdict off DH after tea.0 -

I was thinking about these the other day!
My mum used to make them when I was small and I'd love to make some for my kids as I remember them being so scrummy!0 -
My mother used to make them for me they were like a piece of heaven. Though it would always seem that me family and including an aunt would always work it out and she would have to hide them for me.
If they are the same ones, you make your jam tarts, then make your meringue using 2 egg whites, 5 tablespoons of Caster Sugar and and fold in about 1/2 to 3/4 cups of dessicated coconut and bake in a 200 degree celcius oven for 10 to 15 minutes until golden in colour.0 -

Resurrecting the thread as I had some of these at a party last night - brought back memories and i googled a recipe.
My mum used to call these "Welsh Cakes" but i know that they aren't proper welsh cakes. Am going to make some this week.

Coconut filling.
4oz Margarine, 4oz Caster sugar,4oz Dessicated coconut, 1 Egg
Cream margarine & suger together, stir in coconut & beaten egg Mix well. Form the filling into 24 little balls (about 1 tsp full in each) Place 1 on each case and flatten to fit Bake in a moderate oven gas mark 3 or 4 about 15 mins. You don't need to blind bake the pastry. Just make the jam tart, put the goo on top and chuck in oven. My mum makes these and they are lovely.0 -
These are called Hertoz cookies (tarts) in South Africa and we always had them at Christmas. The ones larlarsuperstar gives are one recipe and then there is also the recipe with the coconut folded into a meringue. The name comes from history when the election was between Jan Smuts and Colonel Hertzog, the latter's supporters handed out these at the polling stations to attract voters and the other siade handed out Jan Smuts cakes which are jam tarts made with apricot jam with a sponge topping.I was off to conquer the world but I got distracted by something sparkly
