    Does he mean snowballs?

Never made them but buy them at bakers.

Two half circles of cake with jam inside and covered in flaked coconut stuff.

    mmm... I want them now....

Sounds a bit like a Manchester tart to me, thats like a jam tart with coconut and some versions have a creamy/custardy bit too

Maybe it was a kind of coconut meringue, 2oz suger to one egg white, whipped up until stiff and then fold some dessicated coconut in. I've never tried this (although it sounds quite good actually lol) but I'd imagine if you put a blob of this on top of the tart and then bake it as normal, you'd get a tart with a gooey coconut top, I think it would be a bit like 'Queen of Puddings', which has a custardy bottom, with jam and then meringue on the top, but with pastry instead of the custard.

My mother used to make coconut tarts from the Bero Book-they had a jam tart base and a coconut topping but it wasn't really whipped in texture more like a coconut pyramid type of mixture.

Thanks gingernut and Thirzah both sound like they could be the one. Will check whether it was a solid type topping or light and fluffy. Off to see if they have the recipe you are on about on the bero site.

Gingernut Meg you cracked it. Just got off the phone to his mum who checked with the great lady herself (90 year old nan) and whats what it was. Jam tart with coconut meringue on top and she used to put a pasty cross on top.

Guess I should have phoned her in the first place but his Nans memory is not a good as it was and didnt want her getting annoyed with herself if she couldnt remember.
