    Adding a provisional driver usually increases the premium.

    If considering a new policy to add the provisional to, then check with your chosen insurer before buying that they will continue to cover the learner after passing the test (assuming you want to continue to allow the learner to use the car).

    Some insurers won't cover brand new full licence holders, meaning that should you be told the learner cannot continue being covered you will have to cancel the policy and take out a new one elsewhere to let the driver continue after passing.

    Also worth getting an idea of the increase in premium to expect once the learner passes before buying a policy.

    From personal experience I found Diamond, though not the cheapest to insure a provisional as named driver, were quite reasonable in the premium increase on passing the test.

    Actual example for a group 4 car:

    Without provisional driver- £170;
    With named 17 y/o provisional driver - £680;
    Increase when 17 y/o passed test - £175 (for 11 months remaining).

    From that I extrapolate the full year with her as named driver would have been about £835.

    Do your homework by trying the quote with the young driver shown as a provisional and then as a driver with a new full licence.

    An insurer thats cheaper for my vehicle and postcode may not be cheaper for you.

    You need to do the comparison sites or contact your insurer to see what they charge.

    Also check what will happen to the premium when they pass their test. Some will charge a fortune after they pass their test as can then driver unsupervised.

  • I used coveredlearnerdriver.com for my daughter. It is a stand alone policy for the learner. I only used it for a short period so my daughter could get practice before her test. For a short period it was the cheapest for our postcode.

    Actual example for a group 50 car with Aviva:

    Without provisional driver- £352;
    With named provisional driver - £398;
    After passed test - £398

    No change in premium and no admin fee as change of licence notification done online.

    As above, there are too many other variables to say that one company is outright better than the next. Admiral, sister company to Diamond, were quoting around £900 for the same as a provisional driver. Didnt bother checking their price for a newly passed driver as their price for provisional was far higher.

    Most companies declined to quote which isnt surprising given its a group 50 car and those that did were typically around £2k

    Simply follow the normal techniques for comparing prices and go for the company cheapest for you. It really doesnt take too long to use an aggregator and then the couple of bigger players that dont list on them.

    Remember that its instantly cancelled when she passes her test and any paid premiums lost in cancellation costs. You then have to do the same leg work of finding an insurer that will allow you to add a newly qualified driver to the policy and so will have cancellation fees to pay on your current policy too.
