Faulty TV from Currys 18 months old. What is the process?

Afternoon Everyone,
Looking for some advice.
I noticed today that a vertical line has appeared on my plasma.
Its 19 months old but I bought it from Currys and only had a year warranty on it. (my last 2 were from John Lewis and never claimed in the 8 years of them. Doh!)
The TV was £700 so an expensive TV for what you can buy them for today (51" 3D)
I have not contacted anyone yet, but Samsung will fob me off. So need to contact Currys.
Any advice would be very helpful.

Your contract is with the Currys, not Samsung, as such you need to contact Currys.
Chances are, currys wont do anything. As its over 6 months old the onus is on you to prove the item is inherently faulty. To do this you will need to get an independent report detailing that the TV is inherently faulty.
If this is the case, take the report to Currys and they will have to remedy the situation and refund the cost of the report.0 -
Ok thanks. Looking on the owners thread over on AVForums seems its a common issue and loads are having their panels replaced 18-24 months into the age of the TV.
I'll contact Currys first to see what they say and go from there, then get it independently checked over.0 -
Things to do:
Ring Samsung to see if they'll do anything free of charge. It's always worth a try. If not, ring Currys to see if they'll do anything free of charge. Again, worth a try, but they'll be aware that without any proof of an inherent fault they have no responsibility.
You will then have two options. The first, which you may be offered over the phone is to pay for Currys repair centre to inspect the item (£95 cost, they will pick it up from your house). If a manufacturing fault is found, it will be fixed and you'll be refunded the £95. If not, they will give you a cost for repair. Alternatively, you can get a report from a third-party (e.g. local TV engineer). It will need to state what the fault is, the cause of the fault, and whether it has failed prematurely or if it's down to normal wear and tear (pretty unlikely on something 2 years old). When you've got that, you can send that to Currys and they will arrange either for a repair or partial refund (they can also replace/issue a full refund but rarely do).Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

Update-
Phoned Currys and they took all the info and then said they would charge me £95 to pick the TV up and then charge me the price of the panel to fix it. Then said it really is not worth doing this as the panel costs more than the value of the TV.
Tv was £1200 on sale to £700 18 months ago, the panel costs £550 without labour costs.
So mentioned the SOGA and if they they want to go down that route i will be more than willing to get an independent report for him.
Soon changed his tune and said i need to mention the SOGA for them to fix it that way as if i don't know about it they will charge the normal to everyone. Very odd, but he said that why the process from head office.
His manager is going to call me in 48 hours to sort the issue out.
I would like it repaired as it's a 3D tv and they no longer make plasma tv's anymore (cost to much to make).
But if they going down a partial refund route, does anyone know what the ratio is?
700/6 years = £117 oer year - 18 months = £525?0 -
The calculation is often not that easy, as the value depreciates faster in the first year of ownership. Not to say it won't be worked out as that, though. £500-ish seems more than reasonableSquirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you.
