Income Support to JSA

Hello,

My DD is about to start school in Sept and Im not sure when IS payments will stop. Is it when she starts school or when she turns 5, please? I have telephoned and asked within the JC and they have both said when she starts school but info online suggests when she turns 5.

I have been looking for work for the past 2.5 months in preparation for Sept but I have had no luck. I live in a seaside area that shuts down from October - April so all cafes, shops, offices run on skeleton staff.

I am retraining to give myself a good chance at a career but happy to do anything for the next year until Im qualified. Please believe me when I say Im trying- I have applied for 35 jobs from cleaning, to porter to lollypop lady. My only problem is that Im not able to work weekends and out of school hours. There is no afterschool club as it is fully booked (although I have them on the waiting list for summer term) and only 7 registered childminders within a 10 mile radius- all of which are full for the school term.

I am also a lone parent with no family or friends at all that could help out with childcare. My childrens father lives 250 miles away and visits every month for a day or two.

I dont want to be defeated in finding a job but Im being realistic in that I may need the help of JSA to pay the bills for a short period. How easy is it to 'swap' benefits and is it a fast transition?

Thank you for any help you are able to give me, very much appreciated. :)

  • It is on their 5th birthday that the transition should happen. Normally DWP write to you, telling you that & that you need to claim JSA if no job by then.

Definitely at age 5, not when they start school. Transition should be straightforward. You generally apply on-line for JSA and I think you can apply in advance. GOV.UK will give more detail. For a government site it's actually quite informative!
