entitlement to benefits

My husband is getting close to being unable to work through ill health. We think his company is trying to push him out. Although he suffers a lot with pain he is quite determined to remain in work but I think the time has come for retirement on health grounds. He has had very little time off over the years and has paid into the system, his company does not pay sick pay!! I would like to know what benefits we are entitled to mainly. He has worked all his life and we have savings but obveously they will not last forever. We just would like to know what we are entitled to.

    It wouldn't be wise just to leave work - look at benefits that are available for people with poor health.

    You don't say whether or not you work and that will make a difference. Also, if you have savings over £16k and claim ESA, the payment will be £71.40, the Contributions based rate. If neither of the above applied you would get the Income Related couple rate of about £113. If you have savings of between £5,5k and £16k there will be a reduction of benefit at the rate of £1 for every £250 of savings.
    If either of you are in receipt of a pension that can also affect the amount you will receive.
  • Correct rates for ESA = £72.40
    Couple = £113.70
    savings threshold = £6k
    & between £6k - £16k reduced for each £250/part thereof by £1
    & over £16k none.
    That is for income related ESA BTW.

    Hi, he is 61 this year and his company only pay stat sick pay. I was made redundant last year and am setting up a small business.
  • You may be able to get work tax credits if he is laid off. He could try & get an ill health retirement pension out of the coy sche me - assuming he is in it.

    In that case, he's not old enough to claim Pension Credit which could have helped.
