What would you wear to a wedding reception?

Options
My old work friend is getting married and I've been invited to the reception, but I'm not too sure what would be suitable to wear. I've only ever been to three weddings where I wasn't a bridesmaid and they were when I was about 11 so I need some help!

I'm 22, 5ft 8" and about a size 14-16.

When you say reception - is it the meal or just the evening party?

For just evening party, I treat it like most other parties - comfortable but dressy- e.g trouser dressy top, or dress that isn't too OTT. People tend to dress up more for ceremony and meal so whatever you wear is unlikely to be too dressy but personally I would avoid jeans or something too casual. It also depends where it is, I.e posh hotel! Or at someone's house!

More like a party dress than something for a wedding.

I think it's just the evening party, and it's at a posh-ish hotel - I haven't received the proper details, she opted to put a sign up in the staff room of her work and my OH told me about it:rotfl: (she has invited me though, don't see that as me tagging along! :D)

    Thanks for the advice :)

  • You don't give much indication as to your usualy style... however if you're confortable in a dress I think that something 50's style may strike the balance well between being smart but not overdressed.
Something akin to this perhaps but without the petticoat?

Hearts and Roses (available on Amazon) do lots of these style of dress and they're REALLY flattering fro anyone with a few curves (busty person here - trust me on this!)

    Hope this helps!

I'm quite relaxed when it comes to clothes. I've seen some 50s dresses that would be perfect so these links have helped too, thanks :)

  • No worries - The fit of the Hearts and Roses stuff is REALLY flattering and it's not too expensive either!

  • I'd probably go for a 50s-style dress but that's my 'look' anyway for parties/formal occasions. That said for an evening do I think you can get away with dark jeans, a nice top and heels - the kind of thing you'd wear for a night out. Generally as long as it's quite smart and not too scruffy or 'tarty' then I reckon you'll be all right; just wear what you'd feel comfortable in.

Yeah I'd ideally like to wear something that I could wear again.

I have a red high waisted dipped hem maxi skirt which is pretty so I was thinking that and maybe buy a new top to go with it.
