Hi There,
I am a new driver just past driving test. I am looking for a used car. Just wandering how much discount you can got from a dealer if I paid in full. 10%?
Cheers

Not sure what sort of discount you mean, there is no discount for new drivers. Do you mean you want to haggle for a lower price?
The price on the screen is what they are selling it at. Depends on dealer, what car it is and other circumstances. Some dealers are strict and the price on the screen is what you pay. Cash only may not be an incentive as many dealers make money off the finance agreements they arrange. Also If a dealer has had car on forecourt for a couple of months they may be keener to do a deal.0 -
If you pay in full? Can't you pay half and get the rest free?
Haggle and see what their cheapest price is.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Try doing a deal near the end of a month.
If the salesperson hasn't met their sales target they may be very keen to do a deal. If not, find one who is!We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.

Also check market value - if a £2k car is being advertised for £2500 then a 10% discount is looking pretty poor compared to that £1900 car the dealer wasn't willing to negotiate on.0

Dealers prefer you to buy on their finance, because they earn commission from the finance co.
But assume that every price is negotiatable, aim to pay the market value and no more-any motoring guide will tell you the value of a used car.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Sometimes they give a bigger discount for taking their finance as they get bonuses etc, but you can pay the finance off early (ie asap).0

I'm assuming you mean pay in full with cash?
You wont get *any* discount *because* you paid in full with cash.
Dealers prefer you to take finance because they get a back hander from the finance company. They also prefer trade ins because they can make money reselling them.
Therefore waving cash as an incentive to give you a better price isnt going to work - in fact you're probably their worst customer option.
You may well still be able to negotiate a better price, though bear in mind the cars price relative to others on the market - i'd rather have £100 off a car at £10,000 than £1,000 off the same car priced at another dealers for £11,000.0 -
Finance will get you a better deal IMO.
I have just bought a Ford and there was £1450 discount for taking their PCP, plus a further discount for being ready to purchase there and then. This was on a brand new Ford KA and the overall cost off the 2 years of motoring is cheaper than buying a used car and the aggro that may occur.
If you wanted to pay off the PCP, you would have to let the agreement start so it can be said it existed or else you may have to pay back the discount.
But on the other hand I have bought a used car a while back and the dealer gave us a good discount as had been in stock for a while.0
