What to put cards in?

Options
Hi all,

Just after inspiration and advice please?

We are having a wishing tree at the wedding so that guests can write advice, jokes, quotes etc on tags and hang them onto the tree for us to read at a later date. Aside from his my thoughts have moved to what we can use to collect the cards from guests?

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks

We're using a stainless steel milk keg which one of our farming friends is going to give to us, and we will paint/decorate it and make it look jazzy. Just a few options:-

    Hired postbox
    Vintage suitcase
One of the big, jazzy gift boxes you can buy with a hole cut in the top

Have a look on Pinterest as well, there are loads of ideas for everything on there!
  • I looked at commercial wedding card post boxes and they were pretty cheap (£2 and up) but they are all tiny - some of the bigger size cards that people tend to give at weddings would never fit in the actual box, let alone through the post slot in it. Also, they all had a lift off lid at the top. I wasn't happy with the security aspect as some people may put money in their cards (easy to lift off the lid and rifle through and small enough to swipe the whole thing easily).

So I got a tall slim box box out of my loft (that my dressmakers dummy came in) and have cut a slot in it and covered it with crepe paper and ribbon. Cheap, large enough to be easily spotted by guests with cards, harder to steal and sealed at both ends until we take it home and rip all the crepe paper off to get the cards out. We also have a breezeblock we are putting in the bottom for stability and security.

Not expecting any of my guests to nick anything but there'll be lots of staff and other people milling about.

I bought a postbox from hobbycraft - it was only about £5 then bought some ribbon to jazz it up a bit. It was probs about 80cm tall but fitted in 100 cards x

  • We were going to get a postbox but then my mum found an old attach! case that belonged to my granddad, so now we're using that and one of the ushers will be assigned to keep an eye on it. I like it as it will tie in with the slightly vintage feel of the day and will be a nice way to remember him/have him as part of the wedding.

We bought one of these and decorate it. Very secure and fitted in large cards with money

We emptied it at the end of the wedding breakfast before the evening guests arrived and then took it back to our room at the end of the evening.

We had a large cardboard postbox decorated with ribbon in the wedding colours to match the cake; the hotel events manager who was looking after our wedding took it into their strongroom after the evening guests had all arrrived & we had it brought up to us with our breakfast the next day to open all the cards.

I won a hamper of wine a few years ago and used the wicker hamper from that to collect cards in. I just attached some bunting to it to jazz it up a bit. It still had the straw in it that had protected the wine bottles so I left that in so it didn't look so empty!

How about a personalized hessian sack?

If you google it lots will come up and are around £20 on getting personal. It's a little different and think how easy it will be at the end of the night to just tie it up and chuck it in the car :)

You definitely need to think about security, make sure it's really difficult to open and remove cards without tearing / making it obvious it's been tampered with. A friend of mine had a few cards, some with gift vouchers inside, stolen from their wedding card box (it was a cardboard box covered in wedding paper, with removable lid), and she couldn't say whether they'd been removed during the wedding breakfast or whilst it was in the hotel's care in the office behind reception ...
It's a great temptation unfortunately, as people know there will be gift vouchers and possibly cash in some of the cards.
I hope you find something beautiful and secure!

I made a postbox out of a cardboard box for my friend's wedding - only had a thinnish slot so you couldn't get a hand in and made a little door at the back which was tied in a tight knot with ribbon and had to be cut to get open. The venue actually kept it and it still gets used by them for weddings now, just need a new piece of ribbon or string each time!
