It's their job to assess the time required. They won't spend any longer than they have to. Have far they are travelling will also form part of the equation.

I agree with this - I'd trust them. I assume you told them that you're in a chain and so your buyers will be turning up? Did you get any other quotes, and did the other companies also say they could pack-and-move in one day?

Everyone in a chain normally expects/aims to get the keys around "lunchtime" but this is pretty vague. Of course it's also dependent on the money going through.

We moved out of a four-bed and our company packed the day before and just loaded up on the day. We were done slightly early in a way - packed up by about 11:30, handed the keys to our buyers, then sat outside our new house (just round the corner) until about 1pm as our sellers were still clearing out.

I just remember at my previous flat waiting impatiently to get in because the vendor wasn't ready and I was paying my removals by the hour.

No offence (always a good start to a sentence), but no one should ever pay for removals by the hour. You're totally at the mercy of banks, solicitors, and the vendor when it comes to what time you get the keys.

So long as you're out by early afternoon (assuming legal completion has happened) then your buyers really can't complain at all. :)

Our packers came the day before but we were moving 125 miles away. They finished in half a day and were very good.
Although we didn't pay by the hour if they turned up around midday at the nw house and were kept waiting a couple of hours then no problem but after about 3p.m., I think, there was a modest penalty if they were unable to unpack

I was moving from a one bed flat and had packed all my worldly possesions into one room and basically hired a man and a van. Roll on seven years and we have a 4 bed house complete with all the trimmings...

But yes, I'm sure we'll be out early afternoon.

Dafty Duck - some great advice, thank you for the lenthy post.

We are already in a good place and have emptied a lot of the bathroom and kitchen small bits into smallish boxes that the packers can put into larger ones because the cleaner is coming tomorrow.

Unfortunately I can't get rid of the children (for some reason eBay banned me....) but we do have somewhere local to hang out while they clear the top floors so we can go back and hoover/eat chocolate buttons/play with ipads.

A neighbour is blocking the road in front of our house and we will swap places tomorrow and try and add a few wheelie bins to increase space.

I've made a plan of the new house and numbered rooms /listed where everything goes and stolen Post-Its from work to label furniture and the few things we are leaving for the buyers.

Defrosting fridge/freezer tonight and will stock with water and milk tomorrow.

Oh, and we sawed the bunk bed apart that my OH accidentally glued together when he got confused about which dowls to glue.

So tomorrow is packing suitcases to keep in the car and buying supplies for the removal men. And getting cash out to tip them / buy bribes for the kids. And wine for me.

    And breathe.

And we're moving into a house that has been empty for 20 months so we've got a mission when we arrive.
