I have just heard that tax discs are to be discontinued and every winter we go abroad for a few months and do a SORN for 2 cars.
Does anybody know how that will work?

Exactly the same as currently, but without having a piece of paper in the windscreen.
If you're buying 6mo tax, then you might like to know that the premium is going down from 10% to 5%.0 -
It will be pretty much the same. You'll still have to tax the car, there'll just be no paper disc that you have to display - only an electronic record of which cars are taxed. So you'll SORN the car (online or by post) and any remaining months tax will be refunded - there just won't be a disc that you have to return. When you get back you unSORN it by paying tax again.0

When is the start date for this does anybody have an idea“People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. We want the biggest house, fanciest car, and we don't mind paying the sky high mortgage to put up that show. We sacrifice our biggest assets our health and time, We feel happy when we see people look up to us and see how successful we are”

Yeah, it's only the paper they're getting rid of.
My cynical side is telling me they're doing it stop people phoning them to grass people up for having no VED.
Anyone without VED can only get away with it by registering the car to a false name/address (a bit like those illegal taxi firms). They don't want the expense or hassle of chasing after ghosts into Bradford or P1key camps.
Money is best made from traceable hard working citizens, when they forget to renew or get caught out on the MOT/insurance/etc.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

My cynical side would be that you can't transfer tax.
With cameras and databases there is less walking around checking the disc on the windscreen etc.0 -

Yes, you can't transfer tax and can only claim back full months.
Anyone buying a car also needs to tax it in their name so, as I see it, essentially cars sold and bought will be taxed twice in one month... which is a nice earner.0
