Windows 8.1 email programme

What is the best free email programme for my new windows 8.1 PC to send and receive TalkTalk POP type emails ? I don't want to use 'Outlook' and/or change to IMAP.
How do I transfer all my existing stored emails and my email address book into a new programme as I need to keep the majority of my 'old' addresses and emails ?

I use Mozilla Thunderbird. It's quite popular, and there are plenty of guides available to help you to use it.
Q: What kind of discussions aren't allowed?
A: It goes without saying that this site's about MoneySaving.

Q: Why are some Board Guides sometimes unpleasant?
A: We very much hope this isn't the case. But if it is, please make sure you report this, as you would any other forum user's posts, to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.

I'll second Thunderbird as an email client.
Just out of curiosity, why would you not want to go IMAP?

Another vote for Thunderbird. I was using it under windows and when I switched to an Apple MacBook it was as simple as copying the data files to get all my messages from before. Use something proprietary is likely to end in tears sometime in the future.
