Travel insurance - cancellation policy

Hi all,

I took a travel insurance for the upcoming trip of me and my girlfriend to US. Unfortunately, my father in my home country has been diagnosed with some brain-related illness (not looking good) and it's very likely I have to cancel my trip (waiting for the MRI complete report to confirm it).

I booked the tickets (BA holiday) for both of us, the policy however covers only me (my girlfriend has a different insurance from her company). Do you know in case of a claim whether they'll refund the whole trip or only half of it? I paid for it all together and all the bookings are done in my name.

Furthermore - anybody claimed for cancellation with an Hospital / GP report from another country in another language? I don't think in Italy they'll be able to write a report in English. I'll be happy to provide the original and a translation but I don't know how it works - I checked my policy conditions and they cover illness of close relatives in home country, so I don't think that should be an issue.

Many thanks

Your policy only covers you. Your gf should use her own insurance.

As long as this illness has arisen since you took out the cover your policy may cover any cancellation costs you incur for your part of the trip, though check your policy wording as many travel insurance policies stipulate that cancellation costs due to the serious illness of a relative of the policyholder is only payable if that relative is a UK resident, or a resident in the home abroad you intend visiting.

Which may not cover it - as the person causing the cancellation is not a relative

My policy says that cancellation is covered if I'm unable to travel because "a close relative or a close business associate in your home country is ill... before the trip starts". Home country is defined as country of nationality so that should be covered. What I think is not covered is the claim on my gf side as I don't think my father would count as close relative for her as we're not married yet.

I'm trying to contact them but apparently they don't pick up the phone very easily...

As posted, your GF won't be covered by your policy, and so she needs to contact her insurer (they are unlikely to discuss her policy with you)

Some travel policies do cover you for cancellation if your travel companion is unable to travel due to a covered event.
