You don't want to be sat in front of a camping stove for ages, water takes long enough to boil on it never mind elaborate meals.

When we were young we used to go camping every year and the favourite things were sausage or bacon butties, tins of macaroni cheese, sausages n beans, tinned ham and spaghetti hoops all the things we wouldn't normally have at home.
Breakfasts were the small variety packs of cereal and bread or rolls from the nearest bakery with lashings of jam.

Oh and before we went to bed we had a mug of soup to warm us up if it was a bit chilly. Usually the dried stuff in a packet such as chicken noodle or similar. Cup a soup would be the thing nowadays I suppose.

Yes, I know it's not exactly healthy eating, but for a couple of days what harm will it do and mum/ dad gets a bit of a break from cooking too.

Take a coolbag with some of those freezable blue blocks in to keep it cool (some campsites offer a free freezing service for these things).

Although I would use my camping stove at night or to boil a kettle, I was lazy when it came to breakfast. I would take those mini boxes of cereals, open up the plasticky bag inside and pour the milk in, eat with a spoon as normal (less washing up too).

Avoid the disposable barbecues too, campsites often don't allow them.

Breakfast: peanut butter and jam sandwiches
    Lunch: cheese sandwiches and fruit
Dinner: fried vege sausages (even if you are a meat eater, they keep better unrefrigerated, less risk of spoiling) and baked beans, fruit

Keep it really simple, nobody will die for a couple of days without greens! It also depends if you are allowed to have real fires (foil baked potatoes are a must!), if you have access to a mini market (in which case you can buy meat on the day rather than have vege - if you are so inclined), how old and adaptable are your children. Long life milk in small cartons is also useful, and a small camping kettle, as the water boils so much quicker than in a pan. Plentiful supplies of instant coffee, tea bags and instant hot chocolate, a total bedtime must for very young campers!
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

We've just come back from camping... Spag Bol, curry - use a jar! As everyone has said, it's a few days, no one will die if they don't have their five a day!!

  • I'd recommend packing up a picnic for the first day, much easier after all the faffing around with the tent and setting up.

I'd also do some baking, things like parkin improve when kept for a week (or longer), rock cakes, flapjacks, loaf cakes etc etc.
Savoury muffins are a good alternative to bread rolls, and are easy to make.

    have fun :)

Thanks, how long would these take on a little camping stove?

I would think no longer than about twenty minutes - apart from frying onions its mostly 'warming through'. I did take that into account when thinking of recipes - you don't want to be using too much gas and spending too long cooking.:)

    Have a great holiday!

Bacon, eggs and beans/ tin toms for breakfast,

Pot noodles, buttered rolls with ham/ cheese and cuppa soup for lunch, or find a bakery near by and get a warm pasty etc

Sausages, finger rolls, cheese squares and fried onions.. Yummy hot dogs

Tin pots, sweet corn, tin mushrooms tuna heated through with beans or a tin of condensed soup, with buttered rolls

    Fruit
    Toasted marshmallows.
    Jelly pots

    Have a lovely time
  • I always make a chilli for the first night but usually don't make it quite as runny then we just have it like burritos in tortillas , then you don't have to cook rice just quickly warm a tortilla in a dry frying pan.
Again like others - bacon / sausage but ties for breakfast and a BBQ 2nd night , then fish and chips as a treat.

If you plan on making a chilli/bolognese for the first night, freeze it and then take it out of the freezer ready to take on your trip. It saves using freezer blocks.
