Swapping an exempt disc to a different car.

Hi, I have a question for all you knowledgeable people out there.

Myself and my husband have a car each, my car has an exempt tax disc on it and expires in March, my husband's car has a paid tax disc which is due for renewal.

Due to my health deteriorating, I no longer drive or very little on a good day. Therefore, we want to swap the exempt disc over to my husband's car as he drives me to my appointments etc. then pay for the disc on my car as I very rarely use it and are wanting to give it to my daughter.

Can I swap these over at the Post Office, if so, what evidence do we need, I'm guessing the normal documents for taxing a standard car plus exempt certificate.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cannot see how you would be allowed or able to just swap at a post office .

Route as i see it would be to apply for the tax exemption on your husbands car if you have nominated him as a driver .
BUT and its a big but the rules say .It must only be used for the disabled person’s personal needs. It can’t be used by the nominated driver for their own personal use.

Once the car is taxed as disabled then you simply change the taxation class on your car to PLG and you can do that at a main post office .

JJ Egan, surely they wouldn't allow me to tax my husband's car, when I already have an exempt tax disc on my own car, that would be 2 exempt discs in my name at the same time.

Mole rat, we are going to ask at a post office to see what they suggest. Thank you for the links, I did look yesterday on their site but it wasn't obvious.

Lemon tart, my thoughts exactly, I didn't think it would be as simple as that, unfortunately.

I am assuming that we will have to change the tax disc on my car first back to a paying one and then apply for an exempt one on my husbands car, just as we did originally for my own car.

Thank you for pointing out that once my husbands car has an exempt tax disc on it, it needs to be for my use only, which it is, he is my carer and I am usually in the car with him or he is using the car for my benefit, such as getting medication etc. He will also have the use of my car when needed.

Thank you again for all your help. I will post on here what the post office say, as it may help anyone else who may find themselves in the same situation as I.

    Sue
