How to Keep Salad Fresh

Hi
I went away for the weekend, and realised that I had a new partly eaten salad in the fridge. I hate throwing things in the bin, so put it in a sealed plastic tupperware tub (in fridge.)
When I came back 2 days later, it was in a much worse state than I expected. A lot of condensation had formed inside the tub, and the salad was soggy. In fact I think it was in much worse condition than if I had just left it lying in a half opened bag.
Does anyone have any top tips on preserving salads.
Cheers

1) dont buy bagged salad
2) to preserve whole lettuce - remove packaging, put small amount of water in a bowl, cut small sliver from base of lettuce to expose the root, put lettuce into bowl , recover loosely with original packaging and put in fridge. Refresh the water every couple of days , and cut more off the base if it has "healed up"0 -
Hi Dlusman
Thanks for the top top. Though Ill be honest, I hardly ever eat lettuce any more. Its mainly the darker leaf salads e.g. Rocket, Spinach, Watercress that I go for.
Cheers

I chop up lettuce and store it in a glass container in the fridge, it seems to last a bit longer that way.One life - your life - live it!0

Take the leaves and wash, then soak in a solution of 30ml of sterilising fluid in 5 litres of water. Leave for two minutes, rinse and spin in a salad spinner.
Layer your salad crisper with kitchen towel, and throw the dried off leaves into it. I promise you it will keep for ages and doesn't have any "taste" from the sterilising fluid.

Thanks for all the ideas. Is the sterilising fluid on the salad necessary to preserve the salad, or is to more to prevent e-coli, sometimes found on salad leaves?
Thanks

It kills the bugs that can make food rot, not just the nasties that can make us ill xx0

I aways place my bagged salad in a plastic container with a piece of kitchen roll to absorb the moisture from the leaves. It works a treat for me and I have done this lots. Do give it a try.0

Hi MuzikMaster
Thanks for the tip
I had done the same thing, kitchen paper, inside a totally sealed tupperware box. I was really surprised to see 2 days later, that the plastic container was full of moisture that wasn't apparent when I sealed it, and the salad was a soggy mess. I'm not sure what went wrong in my case to be honest. Normally green leafed salad lasts quite a long time if just left lying in an open bag, so I was surprised to see the soggy mess in the plastic container.
Cheers
