    Debt-free and Proud!
My boyfriend loves footie too but cause he's saving for us to get a house one day he's not got Sky Sports and he goes round to a friends house to watch the footie. Think you should have a serious discussion with your husband. If your finances are joint then it would be really hard to do this on your own. You need his support.

Hi Glitzy..... sounds as if ur DH has not has his LBM just yet:confused:

From ur OP, u appear to have approx £12.5k of debts.... are these joint? And is he aware of all of them? The reason I ask is because u will find it hard trying to deal with these all on ur own! It's all well and good having a budget if only one of u is sticking to it - personal experience tells me this, altho OH is finally starting to come round :D.

There also seems to be a lot missing from ur SOA - the most important one is food!!!

Take a look at SouthernScouser's sticky at the top of the page, and try to write urself out a full SOA - going back thru the last couple of months bank/CC statements is a good way to tell how much u've spent. Also get hold of ur APRs for the debts - phone the companies if u have to, so we can see a true picture and try to help u cut back. You may find that u won't need to consolidate after - unfortunately u won't find many fans of consolidation here, we've all done it too many times and it hasn't worked... It only works if the loan/card u get means u are paying less overall (not just monthly payment, I mean total interest) AND u adjust ur attitude so that u don't run up debts again.....

God, that all sounded like such a lecture - please don't take offense to any of what I just said.
Please please keep posting here, there are always people here to help, with a vast amount of experience, as we have all been in similar situations. U will pretty much always find someone here, 24hrs a day, and no question u ask will ever be judged or considered silly.

    Take care

  • LBM - light bulb moment - the moment when u realise u need to do something about ur debts. You have had yours, hence why you are here, his may be some way off (like my OH :D )

PS - My OH also refused to get rid of Sky, but he doesn't go out anywhere near as much as he used to, so its his 'treat' - Keeps him quiet anyways!

I am with you there with keeping them quiet! I think my husbands LBM is a long way off, but I do hold the purse strings.

  • First of all, Glitzy, welcome to the DFW threads. You've come to the right place, there are so many people on here who have been in the same position as you and have already succeeded/are now enthusiatically trying to wipe out their debt. Good Luck:beer:

Just a couple of ideas to add to the advice you've already been given.

As your OH has a gym membership he doesn't really need the home gym equipment as well. Couldn't he cancel the gym and make do with the equipment at home in the short term? If he is unwilling to do that, could he make more use of the gym facilities and sell his home gym equipment to raise some cash to pay off some of the debt?

Could you use the Sky subscription as an incentive to pay off the debts quicker? Get him to cancel it for now with the promise it will be the first thing to be reinstated as soon as you can both really afford it. That way he has an incentive to help clear the debts. It's no use you trying to do all the cost-cutting if he isn't willing to join in. In the meantime get Freeview instead and get him to visit family or friends when any important footie is on Sky.

Also, don't worry about the holiday. It's booked now and a big family celebration like that won't come round too often. Enjoy it without feeling guilty and come back refreshed and raring to go clearing your debts. Incidentally, you aren't paying for everyone to go and the whole thing are you???

Start a spending diary and post a full SOA soon and you'll be surprised how much constructive advice you'll get from the lovely DFWs on here..

    Take care

That might be correct for Working Tax Credit if ur houshold has a high-ish income - thats what we get, but Child Benefit is £72.40 for the first child, regardless of income

My husbands friends watch footie up the pub so its 6 of 1 half a dozen of the other, plus with summer hols my daughter can watch sky, anything for a quiet life!

My husband only has a bench and weights, which cost £30 (i shopped around). I think he should give the gym up and go running.

Going to do my SOA next week, looking forward to it - keep me busy out of the shops!

We are only paying for the 3 of us to go to Orlando.

Anyway off to work now, everyone else sleep well. x
