you can use another one, but these days sky use MER on ADSL, so you'll need to spoof the MAC address of your existing router into the new one you buy..unless they've changed again recently...

I don't know about 'pure' Sky, but when I swapped over from O2, all I did was enter the generic details into my Netgear.
Then rebooted it, worked first time.
    Move along, nothing to see.

unfortunately the ex-O2 customers were a special case...

I've just been over on skyuser.co.uk forum and the MER problem is ongoing..workarounds are found and sky change it again..even MAC spoofing appears to be no guarantee any more..passwords appear now to be generated from several unique hw id's and MAC, but also sky are using sticky ip addy ranges

I think you'll be fine with one of the new types off ebay. It's likely it will just work - at the very worst you'll need to change the id/password but I'm sure sky could talk you through that. Obviously the wireless password will change too.

It may work but odds are it'll be blocked (internet light will be solid amber). Sky will see from your account that you should have a different router and won't unblock it as it's clear it was from a now closed account. (All should be blocked but sometimes they slip through)

Just get them to recontract you for a free one (plus p&p) If the first agent says no just call back and ask another. (Most will say yes).

I have tried to get a free one - I even offered to pay a small amount towards it, but they won't budge. When I tell them I'd go to another provider, they just said to me 'it's my perogative' . Baically, they're calling my bluff, and quite frankly, I'm generally happy with the service (been with them for 6 years) and never had any problems. I don't want to give them notice to cancel and possibly end up with an inferior service.

Wrong department. You won't get the offer until you ask to leave and get put through to retentions-they're the ones with the authority to dole out the freebies, and their sole job is to stop you leaving. The first tier agents don't have the power.
Ring, ask for your MAC and they'll put you through. When they ask you why, that's the time to explain that you can't afford a new one.

Former Be and O2 subscribers who migrated to Sky's ADSL service have been able to use their existing routers on Sky's network by entering a common username and password. I don't know if these credentials work for existing Sky subscribers but, if not, it seems that there are techniques that allow existing Sky subscribers to extract the username and password from their Sky-supplied ADSL box for use on their own box.

I was moved over from BE Broadband to SKY and never got a new SKY router/modem, which I want!

I just got switched over and kept using my BE Box, no entering passwords or anything.

Would a newer SKY router be better?

No, judging by a lot of the posts on the Sky "Unlimited, Lite & Connect broadband" forum (http://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Unlimited-Lite-Connect-broadband/bd-p/sky_broadband).
