Piddle Pads for Pooches!

I was given a fantastic tip for house training when we got our puppy, so I thought I'd pass it on here, as it really worked for us.

The breeder had been paper training them from when they were very young but was sprinkling grass picked from the garden onto the paper. Whenever they went for a wee, they got the smell of the grass, and when let out, they automatically associated the smell of the grass in the garden with what they were supposed to be doing.

We got Lola at 8 weeks, and she only ever had 3 accidents in the house when she was learning thanks to this.:j

For me, the big advantage of pads, is that a dog that was trained on them as a puppy, will be more likely to use them again when they are older.

With luck, all our dogs will live to old age, and most reach a stage when they have trouble holding it, or need to go at very short notice. That is when pads become invaluable. Otherwise it can be very distressing for dog that has been taught it must never toilet in the house.

I'd rather put up with the inconvenience of a slightly delayed toilet training, to have that option open in later years.

You may be tolerant of it pboae, but so many people aren't, and one of the many reasons dogs end up in rescue is that they 'aren't house trained'. Of all the dogs I've had, man and boy <G> (10 so far) I've never had an oldie whose got distressed about messing in the house - they've always been able to make me aware they want to go out - even the oldest, who was 17 when he passed away.........

We are so lucky with our pet pooch! He came to us at seven weeks already using newspaper when a pal suggested the proper plastic-backed pads would help protect the carpet.

Being greenhorns with all things doggie, when told pup couldn't go out till after his vaccinations we took it literally. Anyhoo, come the glorious day he was released into the exercise yard[back garden!] & he has naturally done his business out there since:j We keep a pad around tho for the times when the door is closed & have noticed a lot less usage.

Also I think the pads are very handy for visiting other people's homes as they fold up quite small to transport & a lot less embarrassing than getting down on your hands & knees to clean the host's carpet!

Absolutely, and oldies are not immune to that either. Which is why having an option to control accidents when they do get older can be so important.

Well, I don't know if you have been very lucky, or I have been unlucky, but that hasn't been my experience, or that of my close family. Our last old dog had big problems with it, two of my Mum's oldies did (one didn't) and one of my MiL's dogs did.


BigMummaF, everyone has different opinions on the best way to housetrain, but it sounds like your method is working for your pup. :T
