    Hi

We did Maui this summer for 11 nights (via Vancouver) and loved it. Boys are 12, 18 and 20 and had their best holiday ever. Diving, surfing, snorkeling with turtles, blow holes, waterfall jumping. Easy to get around, we drove up the volcano and along the Hana highway too.

Monterey is well worth a stop. Boston I love, your Mum may enjoy the mappariumwe all did and the Duck tour was good.

Washington DC nigh time walk around the monuments is nice.

San Fran winding street obviously a must with a tram trip.

    Have a great trip

PS Maui is expensive in restaurants, supermarkets so just be prepared. Booked our condo through this site and was very happy.

Have you considered a night in LA on the way back? Doing Hawaii to the UK with just a change of planes is a very long journey - even in business class - especially if your mother is 80.

We are only doing the Big Island to see the Volcano, can it be done as a day trip or 1 nighted from one of the other Islands, possibly I think, will need to think about that. We are really big on watersport, so snorkelling, jet skies, etc. etc. etc. Thanks

It can be done as a day trip (helicopter) from Oahu (where Honolulu is). It isn't the one that comes to mind when I think of beaches. You could do Oahu + Maui and then take a day trip to big island.

I am another who second the NCL cruise - it doesn't have any at sea days and really is treated as a 'floating hotel' by most people because it is the only cruise in the Hawaiian islands (that just covers the island) but you get an overnight on each island so two days to explore each of them. We hired a car on each island and then went off and explored. If you could convince your Mum to do that, i think you would find it great along with a few days relaxing on the beach when you dock before flying home.
The other good thing about the cruise is two stops on the big island and you do a night time sailing to see the lava flow into the sea plus a sail by of the Napali cliffs. Amazing!

Your itinerary looks great, but having done something similar my only worry would be whether you are tight on time in some of the places when you factor in the cross-country travel immediately before and after.

Hi, thats meant to read as going back to LA the day before, then one full-ish day, depending on when we get flights back from LA. Thank you.

Its good to see that there is variety on all the different Hawaiian islands. Will investigate further. Nothing set in stone.

Thank you all for your suggestions and helpful hint and tips, much appreciated. Will keep you all posted.

    OK. That makes sense.
