Are PO staff on a bonus to sell SD?

As title, I took an item into my local PO, pre-paid for 1st class signed for so just needed the tracking number.

Counter staff - "Is it any value?"
Me - "£50"
Counter staff - "That won't be covered, the cheapest would be SD at £8.60"
Me - "Err...I'll take a chance"

    It's a business.

Businesses are run for shareholder profit.

So is it too much to expect that the businesses concerned understand the terms relating to the products that they are selling or don't attempt to mislead customers in order to increase their shareholder's profits?

The OP stated that the value of the item they were sending was £50 and unless it was money or valuables, RM "signed for" covers goods up to £50 in value.

The Post Offices are either private businesses or government owned. Only Royal Mail has shareholders.

If it is a small Post Office though, as far as I know they get between very little and nothing for handling a prepaid parcel. That doesn't make it the customer's problem though. A stupid system that has become more ridiculous since privatising RM. Just wait until not just Post Office are allowed to sell RM services.
