4GB 2.10GHz laptop sloooooooooowww

Gf Samsung laptop is 3 years old, and has 4Gb RAM and 2.10Ghz processor, but runs sooo slow its untrue. Whenever you click on anytihng, be it a new internet page, or even to open a document, you get the 'whirly circle' thing and a (not responding) in top left hand corner of the screen for a good 10-20 seconds.. Anything I can do to speed it up please?

Reinstall Windows, don't load it up with Norton, McAfee etc

As above, reinstalling Windows will sort it.

You could try running disk clean and disk defragmenter from system tools and uninstall any programmes you don't use. Run a scan with Malwarebytes (free download) too in case of vituses etc

Also how much hard drive space are you using up? If its nearly all of it, that can slow your computer down, so back stuff up, delete stuff and as above defrag your machine.

Having too many programmes load on start up can cause it to slow down too. I know there's a way of choosing, I can't remember what you need to type into the text box on the start menu though. Maybe someone else knows?
  • To access the list that Sharon87 refers to, you type "msconfig" into the start box.
This takes you to the configuration page and one option is "startup".

    disk defragmenter
Since we aren't living in 15 years ago any more, there's not a lot of point in doing this.

NTFS does not degrade from fragmentation in the same way that FAT did.

Windows 7 & Vista automatically defragment when needed in the background. There is no need to do it manually. If there is not enough free space you can't defragment anyway.

If you've got CCleaner choosing start up programmes can be done via tools-start up. This seems more user friendly to me. Google any you don't recognise.
