Confused about PCP.

Hi, so the car that I currently drive is owned by my Mother. We were at the garage a few weeks ago and was told that there was a lot to do to the car, more than its' current value. However that garage had a deal on a new car using PCP, and it worked out affordable.

Again, my Mother is buying the car, she has a provisional license and doesn't drive, I am her driver and as such I am insured to drive her car.

The garage phoned today to get my details as, apparently, only people with full licenses can buy a car through this PCP scheme.

Has anyone heard of such a thing happening before? I am confused about this as I thought all that mattered when buying a car was whether you could pay or not.

Cheers.

It could be a way of the finance company preventing a car being bought for use by someone else, who wouldnt otherwise be approved for finance - which i think is illegal (or at least they dont like it)

I guess in the same way as being the primary driver of a car but it being insured in a parents name could be construed as fronting.

Ask a daft question, but did you get a second garage to check over your existing car, give you their opinion on what work is required and get a second quote?

If a garage said my car wasn't worth repairing then tried to sell me a new one, well my alarm bells would be ringing. They might be perfectly honest but I'd be getting some other opinions and quotes before I decided to get rid of my existing car.

Then when you come to buy a car, shop around, don't just go straight to the garage that has written off your existing car.
