    For lostinrates;

    Toxic plants. Decent seed suppliers do ranges of paddock, game and similar mixes too. They are not flower heavy but they are safe and would be good for birds.

    None Native Seeds - Reputable suppliers are registered with organisations like Flora Locale and work with the RSPB and Woodland Trust because they know the difference between native and none native. That's why I would always buy from a specialist (who has a reputation to protect) not a supermarket or cheap importer.

    Thanks, I am reasonably familiar with field grasses. Wild flowers less so, only from a pov of toxicity.

    I think the wildflower 'meadow' situation is an interesting situation because of the meadow term, at the same time as a big interest in small holding and loss in tradiditional meadows, and the availability of some of these mixtures in large packs ( i.e enough for orchards small paddocks or real little meadows.

    I feel the 'specialists ' are not doing their reputations much good when plants that are poor for grazers are included in the mix. Its some of these that made us lose some of the wild flower meadows!

    Hi RAS, as I wrote earlier it is not considered anything other than garden, we have been living at the property for over two months now and have all the paperwork which shows how over 50years ago the then owners fought to change it from agricultural which was agreed so no concerns there.

    So far have added a Peach tree, Plum tree, two Acers, Cherry tree and a Silver Alba to the original Pear tree, Hazelnut tree, two eating Apple trees and Cooking apple tree, had a nosy at other gardens and chatted to the local nursery. All trees are self fertilising and seem happy!

    I have gotten two packets of wildflower seeds that come from the friends of the earth to help the bees after sending some moolah in support, so may dig out an area on the opposite side from the cow field just in case but hopefully they wouldn't have anything toxic! Will check the website.

    Looking at getting some more trees in early Spring and sorting out some hedging!

    Having a garden is so exciting!
