help desperately needed please!!!!!

hi guys another question.please can someone help me.

just rang british gas to arrange to get a gas meter fitted.

the guy told me someone would contact me within the next 14 days to arrange a day to come and fit a meter for us. does it really need to take that long to arrange for them to fit a meter.

its just that our notice ends in about 15 days on the house we are living in at the minute but we cant move into the new house til a meter has been fitted and a gasman from transco has done a gas check.

so basically if they ring me on the 14th day and arrange a day to come out we will be homeless until the meter has been fitted and a gasman has come.

should i ring them again and ask them to do it sooner.so we can ahve it fitted and gas check done before our notice ends.

thanks

    Could you clarify?
You have asked for a gas meter to be fitted in your new house, and you can't move in until the work is done?
What's the problem with being without gas for a few days?
If is critical you should most certainly chase them up.

Need a bit more info...are you asking for a new gas supply to be fitted in 14 days?...hopefully not. When we had a meter moved it took weeks; one group moved the pipework, another came to fit the meter and I think another came to check it. If its just to renew the meter then why can't you move into the house while you're waiting ????

as I said in the other thread, forget BG they're useless (my personal opinion). Go with someone else ;)
  • hi guys sorry taken so long to reply havent been able to access the p.c.

to answer your questions. we cant move in til a gas ,eter hs been fitted thena gasman from transco can come and do a gas check after that we are allowed to move in. so i'm guessing theres no gas supply either.

just rang them up and what a helpful lot they are. after finally being put through to the right department have been told that need to set up account so start to do that until she asks for me to fax a copy of letting agreement and utility bill. agreement is in partners name so account has to be in his name. hopefully he'll get in before the office closes.

why did no one tell me this the past couple of times i have rang. grrrrrr:mad:

also to answer your question cactus_jack after gettinbg frustrated with the operator i asked if can change supplier and get them to fit ameter in was told that have to wait 28 days til we can change supplier as the gas supply is still in their name.

why doesw things like this have to be so awkward.dont need the stress right now moving house when your 5 months pg and have a lil toddler around is maniac enough without having to be messed around by gas company. hoping scottish power are alot nicer to us when we ring to get our electricity.

Sorry if I'm being a bit thick, but why do you need a gas supply to be laid on before you can move in? If there is no supply to the property, and presumably no internal gas piping, then what do you intend to use the gas for?

  • hi penrhyn we need the gas supply firstly so gas check can be done to amke sure there are no leaks and secondly for hot water, heating and our cooker so we can eat. i'm not bothered about me and my partner as we can survive on microwave meals but no way would i feed my one year old rubbish like that and prefer too cook proper meals for her we would buy her jars of baby food in the meantime but they cost a forune. money which we just dont have.

    bit of an update too.

sent of tenacy agreement and a utililty bill to be told that the pages from tenacy agreement werent the right ones (even though they had the info they needed on) and the utility bill was from a previous address (my partner didnt bother to check that bit). so today we have faxed the right ones through.

its been such a palaver though and the stress is taking its toll on me especially with me being pg i cant sleep eat and i'm constantly in tears as we only have a week left til our notice runs out and i dont know what we are going to do. ita such a mess and british gas dont seem to care at all.

going to get my partner to give them another ring in a minute to see if they have recieved our fax and ask to arrange one to be fitted asap.

what really gets me is why cant they just fit it while an account is being set up. not doing them any harm fitting one in.

The only reason I can thnk of for having gas applainces in a house but no meter is that there used to be one and it was taken away.
Sometimes people do this as they don't want to use gas any more, other times the company does it either for safety reasons (propertty empty for a long time) or recovery reasons (stops any balance getting bigger).

If it is the latter, they are looking for proof that you are not the person who had the meter removed. Once this is done, they should get the ball rolling.
  • not sure why it was taken out but this is ridicuolous over 2 weeks we have been waiting now and we dont have long left on our noitce so will be forced to live in a house with no gas and no gas safety check done as i dont want to be homeless.

just so angry now as they really dont care that i'm 6 months pregnant and very stressed out and we have a 1 year old who needs to have a house with heating and hot water for baths and a cooker so she can have decent meals. losing faith in human beings at the moment.
