What type of Blind?

Has anyone any experience of replacing curtains with Venetian or vertical blinds for domestic use?

I have four west facing windows about a metre to a metre and a half square each, which makes the house quite hot in the summer evenings. I have an unwieldy white reflective blackout curtain in one room which means it gets dark, or the glaring sun blinds me through the gap. I think the best solution are venetian type blinds which can be angled to let some light in whilst blocking off any direct view.

The window handles stick out a long way, so I've been thinking of perfect fit blinds, however these seem to reduce the window area and it might be difficult to insert the fitting inside the rubber seals.

Conventional horizontal Venetian blinds are cheaper but this means they take up all the sill, and clatter around if there is a breeze and the windows are open. I suspect they would make it more difficult to open the window as well. My mother used to have some vertical fabric ones which didn't clatter, so my temptation is to go for something like this. However horizontal blinds might be more private since it they can be angled to let the light in from above.
