This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine.

I'll know it when I see it, lol. Thanks for the Rowan tip, I'll check them out now.
LilyPlonk I would love a lie-in but I just can't
Once I'm awake, I have to get up, I feel like I'm wasting the day otherwise.

They've settled in quite well and have already found their favourite spot in the bushes. Trouble is, it'll all change in just over a week when I put them in the main henhouse/run with the others and they'll have to do it all again
Millie – who is bottom of the pecking order of the older girls – is letting them know that she is above them, she's yelling at them through the fence

My blackberries are finally ready so I'll pick some today. I've had to fence them off to stop the birds pinching them
They're at the end of a border which is very messy at the moment, I'll start clearing it (maybe tomorrow!) then put rocks around the plants to stop next door's cats using it as a litter tray
I need to write a list of gardening jobs and make a start on sorting it for the winter. The flower pots need sorting, they look really messy now. Mr tru wants to collect the seeds from some of the flowers but I'm not sure which. I'll leave that job to him, I'm not a flower person and have no idea what I'm doing with them
Though they will be no seeds to collect if the bantams keep eating the flowers
I'll fence the winter veg off and let the chickens loose on the rest of the patch. Not sure when exactly when this is going to happen, everything seems to be on a different timetable this year

Morning All
Is everyone having a lie-in?! tru I am with you, once I wake up I start thinking of all the things I could be doing, although it's really annoying when that time is 5.30! Woke at that time this morning, thought I would have to get up and then it was 8.20!
Still, stripped my bed and that's on the line, need to get DDs in a minute. She has moved into DS2s room whilst hers is being done. I have someone coming over for the underbed storage baskets from freegle today so that's one thing out of the way.
Need to put more weed killer down today, the garden at the bottom of mine hasn't been cut at all this year and we have no fence at the moment. The dead stuff from my last spray with the weed killer was all dead so I had a bonfire last night and got rid of most of it. I can at last see where the fence has to go.
Just made pancakes for DD when she gets up (she was out last night) and need to empty that room of hers today.
The sun is shining and I have an ice bucket challenge to do! Have a good Sunday. Take care. XX0 -
Morning all. Been a couple of years since I was last on the board but I'm on the hunt for some inventive cleaning and budgeting tips.
Visiting family yesterday and this morn but will be travelling back to London this afternoon. Once back I'll be doing my first lot of stardrops hand washing in the kitchen sink. Got three and a half weeks worth of clothes to get through so could take a while. There's no way I'll get through it all today so might have to prioritise the bits I need for a residential conference this week.
Also need to sort out what bits of food I will take with me to the conf to help keep costs down there. Probably just some nuts, green drink powder and protein bars that won't take up too much space in my bag.
Time for some late brekkie in the sunshine. Have a good bank holiday all!Living cheap in central London :rotfl:0 -
Good Morning everyone, a dull day here but not cold. We've just re-homed two of the pond fish and hopefully the last 5 will be collected later on this morning. The pond is now cleared and dug over and we'll begin to dismantle the old wooden sleepers that were the outside of the flower bed it sat in. I see that the back of the sleepers have rotted badly where they were against the soil and maybe that was part of the problem that led to the pond wall collapsing. No matter, I'm looking forward to making a willow structure for the Zebra child to play in when he gets bigger and we'll plant up round the edges of the bed with it in.
Have been having a cooking session and made scones and have a ginger and date cake in the oven, an old wartime recipe that smells delicious. Have also made bendy veg soup for lunch, very thrifty!!!
Have a good day everyone, Lyn xxx.0 -
Happy sunday everyone
I got up at 7am and made a coffee, put the washing machine on.
Now washing on line and greenhouse watered.
Breakfast = cereal with raspberries from garden.
Runner beans picked for dinner.
Yesterday, I booked a mid week break to the Isle of Wight.
A large 3 bed caravan for just the 2 of us and dog. Plenty of space ;0/
I wanted a 2 bed but none avalible for the date we wanted.
We shall be getting plenty of exercise walking and visiting English Heretage sites ( we have a members card).
This will be our second visit to the Island this year. We love the cliff top walks. Dog runs freely.
Sending good wishes...The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)0 -
Morning all
I was up early with DGD but only just managed to get online.
Welcome to the newbies & welcome back Linsayjayne & adelight. Hugs to those in need, esp elona, Molly & Hilly.
I'm having a lazy day today, DGD went home about 10ish & I've cleared up & I've made focaccia to go with the rest of the soup from yesterday, we'll have that for lunch & I'm cooking lamb shank later with roasties, yorkies, cauliflower cheese, runner beans & carrots, all the veg are HG. I've done some dusting & some washing, apart from that it's feet up & a few snoozes for me today. I need to recoup & recover as we are having the twins over night on Tuesday.
Have a good day everyone.
Hugs HesterChin up, Titus out.0 -
Good afternoon everyone
Lazy morning here but am now being brave and risking taking GDD for school shoes and bag. Am hoping town centre is quiet because of all the festivals going on locally this weekend. Wish me luck!
Well wishes for all sick people and pets and hugs for those that need or just want them. Keep well and safe and have a super day.

Afternoon all,
I'm shattered today. I had my Grandson overnight and he was not very well. My daughter said he'd been up and down for over a week but thought it might be teething. It was only when I stripped him off this morning I saw a few spots on the trunk of his body. Teething my arris I told myself... looks like he's going down with chickenpox or something.
Anyway it all became clear when my daughter collected him. He'd been ill since his last lot of injections just over a week ago. She saw a few spots a couple of days ago but they went. Obviously they had reappeared by the time I got to bath him. He's got a mild case of what they injected him with.
Welcome back Adelight. Ive never thought of using Stardrops for hand washing clothes but it cleans everything else so I cant see why it wouldn't work on hand washing.
Having a lazy day today. Might have a snooze on the settee later. That's if the dogs will let me.
Onwards and forwards,
have a great day all. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Good afternoon everyone
My, it's quiet on here today.Hopefully everyone is off enjoying their Bank Holiday weekend.
I'm writing this from my newly decorated dining room, it really looks lovely and it's so nice to have my computer back. We've mostly put everything back but there aren't any pictures up yet so the walls seem very bare. The girls were a great help and it was all done with as little stress as possible. My poor hubby's knees are very sore though from laying the carpet and glossing the skirting boards. Never mind, he has a couple of days to recover before going back to work.
Just cooked and scoffed pulled pork, it was really lovely and I made some sweet potato wedges to go with it. Clean plates all round though I told the girls they still need to wash them up.
Hope everyone has a fab weekend whatever they are up to. I might break out the knitting needles and teach my youngest how to cast on. Take care xx0 -
Afternoon all :hello: - been a busy morning here with dgs3 this morning and then DS2 / his lovely g/f and dgs2 around lunchtime
.
Hope it's quiet because everybody is having a great weekend.
Thanks for starting the thread, tru - lovely picks of your 'girls'. I'm another who's up/about once I've 'paid a visit'
.
Wish I could have a bonfire around here, camelot - I've been playing 'search & destroy' with so many invading weeds this year, that I've still not been able to 'create my garden'. I keep filling the Garden Waste Bins with Bindweed / Ivy / Brambles / Elder / Mare's Tail / Nettles / Rosebay Willow Herb - they're a blasted nuisance .
:hello: and welcome back, adelight - hope you can manage to find the inspiration that you need and good luck with all that hand-laundry.
Good to hear that you managed to find homes for your poor fish Mrs LW - I have a right phobia where fish are concerned, BUT I'd hate to think of any creature suffering.
good advice - hope you enjoy your short break in the caravan with the dog. OH and I had a 3-bedroom caravan in Scotland earlier this year - it was a bit like 'rattling around' :rotfl:.
Hester - not surprised that you're having a few snoozes - that's one heck of a busy day, especially for a Sunday ! Enjoy your time with the twins next week.
TTFTM - It's a brave woman who ventures 'into town' during this particular Bank Holiday Weekend. Hope you managed to get those school shoes. My DD took dgd2 (age6) into St.H on Friday - not 7 till Oct - and needed size 3's !!!! Think she takes after ME in my size 9's :rotfl:.
Sorry to hear your dgs wasn't well during the night, Judi - poor little lamb.
Hi dumpling - well done to your OH on getting room and carpet sorted :T. Best of luck with the knitting lessons.
I made a Blueberry and Lemon Zest Cake earlier - just in time for DS2's arrival and it didn't last 2mins. Was devoured while still warm. Mixed another one and got it in the oven - OH made his own lunch and managed to turn the oven off at the same time that he turned the grill off . Got quite a surprise when I opened the oven door as the timer went off - he's in trouble ! I've put it back in again, but not holding out much hope
.
DS2 has announced their wedding next year - 19th Sept in St.George's Hall, Liverpool. Sounds very posh, but apparently that's now our local Registrar's Office. His other bit of good news, is that he's finally been given an allotment by Liverpool City Council :j. He's got some hard work ahead to get it into good shape by next spring, but he's very fit .............
. His g/f has mentioned 'chooks' so looking forward to some lovely fresh eggs
.
I've had a couple of lazy hours watching a DVD of a concert by my favourite band - Runrig. Great Stuff.
Just going outside to have a couple of hours trimming the privets and beech hedge that have got out of shape in the past couple of weeks. Lawnmower-man has been and timmed the grass, so the rest of it needs to look smart as well :rotfl:.
Take care everybody, and enjoy the rest of your day - luv Lilyplonk xx0 -
