Scottish Car Boot Recommendations

Evening all,

After reading the full car boot sale advice thread (all 39 pages phew), and sorting out a suitable variety of items to sell, I'm now looking for advice on the best car boots in Scotland.

I live in Glasgow and dont have a car, my parents live in Livingston and I'm asking if they'll take me/be my company, so somewhere reasonably central would be fine. They're likely going to have to come here to collect me and my booty, but this may well be in advance of the actual sale.

In the advice thread I only really saw Polmadie (which is pretty much along the road from me) and Errol mentioned. I'm put off Polmadie by the implication there is a high theft risk there.

Items I have include:
DVDS
Books
CDs
A girly casino set
A whole variety of fancy dress items
Some kitchen items Inc a set of 4 wine glasses
Shoes
And whatever else I can get my hands on

Any thoughts?

If I might be frank- and regulars will know that I am a bit of a doom merchant- make sure you don't spend too much time and effort to do this, your items are unlikely to make much money and the costs might outweigh the benefit. Prices do vary region to region but in London you would be unlikely to sell books CDs DVDs etc for more than a few pence. Fancy dress items would probably struggle and I wouldn't even bother taking wine glasses unless i had lots of room.

If your car boot prices are cheap enough then give it a try- but here I would not pay a £10 pitch fee unless I had a few bigger ticket items and a car completely crammed full with other stuff.

Lifethrualens, I suggest you go as an observer to the car boot sale first. Soolin is correct on the prices front. I help at a charity stall at a car boot sale in North Scotland and you have to be prepared that items are selling for pennies, though we do usually get £1 each for decent CD's. And if possible pick a day when the weather is warm and dry. Also, if you are selling, make sure you have warm clothing and something to cover your items if it rains, a shower curtain thrown over your table maybe. My feet get very cold too, some boxes cut up act as insulation on the ground.

Your idea about the cardboard underfoot is inspired- thank you, I will do that for my colder car boots in future.

  • Hi all, thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I'm a bit limited in being able to go along in advance to check them out but I'll see if I can work something out.

I'm not expecting to make megabucks but a boot sale is better for me than either eBay etc, especially as I have a broad range of stuff and don't want the hassle of postage etc.

The way I see it is I'm having a clear out anyway so I'll sell what I can first, then charity, then chuck as a last resort.

Anyhow location wise it turns out I may end up with Polmadie after all - chatting about it at work yesterday and one of my colleagues has done it a fair few times and really liked it. It's undercover, bonus, and another friend has said she would chum me too for extra eyes and ears
