Cheque Payment Safety

Hi there,
When someone pays a cheque in at a bank does the bank keep an electronic scan of the cheque anywhere, or retain the original?
The reason I ask is that I have to make a payment to someone via cheque for something, and I was thinking to myself "How could I prove what this payment was for, if I ever needed to?".
I intend to write the reason for payment on the cheque somewhere, but if the original cheque is destroyed and not stored somewhere, then surely I would never be able to prove in court that the cheque wasn't a gift or something?

Images of cheques are available long after cashing.0 -
Can you give a little more information why you need to pay anybody by cheque.
For instance if you have a bill to pay you should get an invoice etc.0 -

Local church is organising a pilgrimage trip that has to be paid via cheque.
To be safe, I wanted some kind of comeback on the cheque, so if I knew it was archived somewhere with "payment for pilgrimage" wrote on it, then I would feel a bit better about it.0 -
Yea, best to be safe. You know what pilgrims are like!0

Somehow the mind boggles: If you don't trust your local church.....who do you trust?
Ask for a confirmation of your booking which will also be a request for payment. Once the cheque has been cleared, it will be stored by your bank for (I presume) six years.0 -
I too think OP you are being over cautious.0
