I know British Gas routinely do this, EDF are much better at spotting this, e.g. I ve seen BG wade in to a poor girls credit meter with transposed reads and put in a prepay meter with 2k debt on it without even a word of explanation. . So could these huge direct debits be just a means of the supplier backbilling by the back door . I have been ordered out of many properties over the years when I have uncovered these transposed readings, and have been used in a BBC Watchdog program in the past about meter readers( and customers ) not knowing night from day. Customers love the super low bills resulting from this and many keep quiet about it. I am just suggesting a reason why any supplier would suddenly want to take such a large amount of money with no explanation
Certainly sounds possible. But if this is what has happened npower should have investigated, found out this is the problem, then spoken to the customer and come to a suitable arrangement for the customer to pay as appropriate.
For npower to have done what they have actually done is quite wrong in my view.0 -
thanks for replying ,had no problems with eon, paid quarterly for both gas and electric, eon last bill in may was correct going of my own readings ,the problem started when npowers meter man for some reason got all the readings wrong ,but i didn`t pick it up till after they charged the tariff to £291 ,we agreed ,thats npower would send a meter man in august to check the figures ,i was with him, he had the same figures me, but they have not acknowledge he`s reading ,on the web site all readings since may are there except the august one ,i will gladly pay everything tomorrow if they get they numbers right ,pete0

To be honest transposed reads are as simple as meter reader once putting in the readings the wrong way around, or an agent on the phone doing the same thing.
I have seen 2,3,4,5 rates + transposed almost every single time the meter reader is out, so it's not surprising customers get these confused too.
In relation to ironstomach's query, I would say the redundant heating element of the electricity meter has obviously been estimated incorrectly. The billing system does not have a setting for zero consumption (though it should), so will often throw out odd estimates.
Getting this resolved is as simple as giving up to date meter readings to bill your account with, then asking for your DD to re-assessed.
There is also a potential issue here with the readings from the change of supply. What readings are Npower opening your account from and are these correct? Did Eon create a final bill based upon these readings?
If your start readings are correct and your account is billed up to date with correct readings, you will have an accurate bill and a more accurate annual consumption (which they use to base your DD payments on). You can even ask them to estimate your annual consumption on the amount you've used already and re-assess your DD based on this.
Additionally, getting a single rate meter would be advisable to save hassle in the future. Word of advise, take note of the readings on the day your meter is being taken out + the start reading of your new single rate meter.0
