Hiring a car without a credit card

Hi. My son is coming over to England in 2 weeks time and will need to hire a car but he doesn't have a credit card (either English or Spanish). Are there any reputable hire car companies that will hire out using only a debit card? All help is gratefully received.

Thank you :-)

There maybe a substantial deposit required. Will he have the funds free?

ie. If they want £750 then they will put a hold on that amount in his account. He wont be able to spend that until they release it.

cash should still be an acceptable alternative - but you'd need to ask them in advance, to confirm.

The smaller companies might be flexible enough to handle that, but will almost certainly want a BIG cash deposit.

The big ones tend to go by the book. Their logic (rightly or wrongly) is - if the bank won't trust you with a credit card, why should I trust you with my car?

The only time I managed this (in 2001 as a student) I had to give them £500 cash deposit, for a Ford Ka.

Ring around the big companies and see what can be done.

If he has enough money in has bank account he should be able to use his debit card. I have done this most times I have hired.
