WARNING Admiral Insurance

Whether you are on auto renewal or not - always phone the company to confirm a renewal or a lapse - get the name of the person you speak to, and make a note of the time and date.
Daughter was with Admiral, and I'd always phone to confirm renewal (as if they failed to auto renewal, it could get messy), and when she moved to Tesco called then to advise of the lapse.
Always use the word lapse as well, rather than cancel, if the policy is to expire at renewal, a lot of the dweebs in call centres hear the word cancel, and smack a cancellation fee on for the fun of it.0 -

They send you a letter, which you might not even get since it's just normal mail, that says "if you do nothing we will assume you agree to our new contract (which we probably didn't bother to include) and debit your account". If you don't agree the only way to cancel is waste money writing to them, recorded delivery of course, or calling a premium rate phone number.
Why do you need to send recorded delivery? The law says that something thats posted is received unless the recipient can prove otherwise. Its the rule that insurers rely on and you can rely on it too. Just get a certificate of posting for it and send it second class to be money saving.
I've never seen any insurer use a 09 or 07 premium rate number. Many do use non-premium non-geographic numbers like 087 and 084 but then you just use saynoto0870.co.uk and find a number more to your liking. 0840 and 0870 numbers are both included in my free calls so they personally dont bother me but I switch contracts frequently to ensure I stay on the best deal.
Of cause this "scam" doesnt work in the other way does it? You say you have problems with your post and basically are admitting not to remember to do it without the letter. Of cause if it was a manual renewal and you didnt get the same letter then you still wouldnt remember and instead of paying over priced insurance you'd be driving around without insurance.
Back in my day we proportionally got more complaints from people on manual renewal who were stopped for driving without insurance than complaints from people on autorenewal who had "accidentally" allowed it to renew.0
